When Kennedy and Nixon ran for president in 1960, the partisan divide in California was roughly between north and south. By the Bush-Gore contest in 2000, that partisan split had shifted to east versus west. Over that time, California moved from a reliably Republican state in presidential elections to a Democratic one.
They used to call this Reagan Country.
And why not? After World War II, California voted Republican in 10 of the next 11 presidential elections and Republicans occupied the governor's office for 36 of the next 52 years.
That all changed beginning in the 1990s as population shifts dramatically transformed the state's economy and culture, along with its politics.
Since 1990, with the exception of former Gov. Pete Wilson's 1994 re-election and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's victory in last year's recall election, Democrats won every election for president, governor and the U.S. Senate in California, usually by large margins.
