Thank you anonymous DU Donor!!

A million and one thanks for supporting this awesome forum for Democrats to rant, vent and rage. And a Billion and one thanks for thinking of me, a stranger who lives on a very tight nurses salary. The kind and generous donor read my story about the tiny lady in the traditional hijab: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x559883 and donated in my name. THANK YOU!

And now, another installment to this American's desire to spread a little kindness:

So, I go to a new Mexican restaurant in town. Yes, you know exactly where this is going. To make a very long story short my handsome young waiter with the distinct accent moved here from Mexico to be with his family and to live his dreams. Just like the tiny lady in the hijab, he came to America for all that this country is supposed to stand for. Freedom. Prosperity. Living your American dream.

I didn't ask how he got here or for any papers. I just reached out to this guy and let him know that this country may have it's flaws and some of it's citizens are selfish mean and greedy people. (You know who you are!) But what I stand for and what I believe in is embodied in that lady in the Harbor of New York who stood vigilant on the day that America changed forever. She is a monument to why we should never give up our American ideals.

"Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

I know it may seem pretty trite and I may seem overly sentimental. Yes, mushy etc...Some might even say patriotic. But it is so much more than that. I learned so much from those who came before me. About love and kindness. I learned this from the Christian bible as I grew up in a fundamentalist, pentecostal, evangelical, endtimer (yeah, they all mean different things)right wing Christian kind of house. But what I remember most about that bible I grew up with, was the words of love.

I'm not a Christian, but that is where my seeds of love and kindness were planted. Even my right wing born again father understands that in his older age as he has finally accepted his lesbian, socialist leaning, ("Yes, daddy, I'd like corporations and the mega wealthy to share their wealth with the needy.") pro-choice non Christian daughter. He changed because I never did. I have always reached out in love to him, even after a raging fight over the 2000 elections. He loves me so much that he called my "not wife" on her birthday last week and sang to her.

So reach out. Live by example. America is so much better than the examples that we see on the MSM. And thank you to all the wonderful people here on this network and another thanks to the generous donor who made me smile the other day. Thanks to all of you who made this stranger have a day filled with such a warm feeling in her heart.

1. "He changed because I never did."
That says an awful lot about a dad and a man, and his love for you. I'm so happy for you right there, but your posts are awesome.
I'm so glad you found DU! You've touched so many of us, and I thank you for that.

"So reach out. Live by example. America is so much better than the examples that we see..." Sing it, sister!

Finally, I remember singing that poem in high school chorus, in NY. It means an awful lot to me, too.

I so love that line...

I keep telling my 78 year old Mom (she listens to me because most times, I'm a non-stop shit talking fact machine) not to believe anything she hears on TV or reads in the newspapers.

She has a excellent BS detector.
She used to always say she can't believe how screwed up things are, now she's beginning to understand why.
