Most Chinese want cold war with US
Michael Sheridian, Sunday Times, London, 8 February 2010, 01:50am IST

More than half of Chinese people questioned in a poll believe China and America are heading for a new "cold war."

The finding came after battles over Taiwan, Tibet, trade, climate change, internet freedom and human rights which have poisoned relations in the three months since President Barack Obama made a fruitless visit to Beijing.

According to diplomatic sources, a rancorous post-mortem is under way inside the US government, led by officials who think the president was badly advised on China and was made to appear weak.

In China's eyes, the American response — which includes a pledge by Obama to get tougher on trade — is a reaction against its rising power. Now almost 55% of those questioned for Global Times, a state-run newspaper, agree that "a cold war will break out between the US and China".

An independent survey of Chinese-language media for the Sunday Times has found army and navy officers predicting a military showdown and political leaders calling for China to sell more arms to America's foes.

The trigger for their fury was Obama's decision to sell £4 billion worth of weapons to Taiwan, the thriving democratic island that has ruled itself since 1949.

"We should retaliate with an eye for an eye and sell arms to Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba and Venezuela," declared Liu Menxiong, a member of the Chinese people's political consultative conference.

1. A cold war requires a big increase in the military.
The Chinese think they can beat us economically and will not waste their money on weapons. The Soviet Union went down without a shot being fired. The same will happen if the US does not get its financial house in order.

"Democrats" have a majority thanks to the citizens, and they have bent us over just the same.

3. They have the power we gave them, thanks Dick Nixon.
And they are already busy making deals with nations that are sick of us, our wars and our posturing and our greed.

If we want to recoup, pull out of the Caspian Basin. Let the Chinese act as honest broker with the Taliban and the Afghan tribes, with Pakistan's factions. Have fun, fellas!

We need to come home and build factories HERE.

5. You are closer to the truth than you know. We will use it as a call to reindustrialize.

6. Buy American
Pick it up.
If it says, "Made in China,"
Put it down.

Let the U.S government fight the cold war and lose.
Let U.S. citizens fight the trade war and win.

7. That's a pretty misleading title.
Nowhere in the article does it say that "Most Chinese want a Cold War" with the US. It said most Chinese are expecting one to occur.

I expected BushCo. to invade Iraq, but it doesn't mean I wanted it. :eyes:
