Campaign Finance Ruling May Get Legislative Response (CQ)
By Matthew Murray, CQ-Roll Call

... Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, called the decision a “very, very sad day for American democracy,” speculating that large corporations like insurer AIG will be “able to turn around to spend money to advertise against people” who voted to limit their bonuses ...

Senate Democratic Caucus Vice-Chairman Charles E. Schumer of New York also criticized the decision, saying Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr, “has turned back the clock on our democracy by a quarter century” and that the high court has “just predetermined the winners of next November’s election: It won’t be Democrats, it won’t be Republicans, it will be corporate America” ...

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell , R-Ky., who filed a lawsuit against the McCain-Feingold law, said in a statement following the decision that “for too long, some in this country have been deprived of full participation in the political process” ...

... McCain, in a brief statement, only said he was “disappointed by the decision” ...

1. Republicans would block it.
They're going to keep blocking everything via filibuster.

4. You are absolutely right.
Right now we need to start coming up with good bills, not shitty bills that have been purposely made that way by obstructionist Repbulicans. We need to come up with things the people want, if for no other reason than to make the GOP vote against it.

I like you because you remind me of me.

6. The way to beat it is to say furiners can buy the election
I was talking to one this morning and he was all for the SCOTUS decision. I ask him if he thought Hugo Chavez should be able to come in and influence our elections, that did turn on a light in his small little mind. Your average everyday Republican voter thinks it is great, they think they will take everything in the fall, but they are to stupid to see they are being used.

3. Frankly, I have lost faith in anything
the Dems can do to abort a fiasco. I hear words, words, and more words, but by the time it comes to doing anything it is like a bucket of tepid water rapidly becoming ice cold.

5. Didn't SCOTUS rule that the legislation CAN'T respond?
There already was a law. It's now been ruled unconstitutional. This sounds like more feel-good talk that will accomplish nothing, just like everything else for the last year.

10. Corporations EXIST by virtue of federal and state law.
A united legislature can do what it likes with corporations and with the USSC too for that matter. That doesn't mean it will happen, but it can.
