Lieberman: I'll Join GOP Filibuster Of Health Care Bill With Public Option

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) told reporters today that he would in fact filibuster any health care bill he doesn't agree with--and right now, he doesn't agree with the proposal making its way through the Senate.

"I told Senator Reid that I'm strongly inclined--i haven't totally decided, but I'm strongly inclined--to vote to proceed to the health care debate, even though I don't support the bill that he's bringing together because it's important that we start the debate on health care reform...

14. Unfortunately, we're stuck with him.

But at least he'll have to stand before voters after screwing this up.

16. NO WE'RE NOT!!! STRIP HIM OF ALL HIS POSTS - NOW!!!
We only need FIFTY to keep the chamber - he's PROVEN DEAD WEIGHT now...he should not be allowed to keep his committee assignments.

He should be relegated to the LOWEST on the seniority totem pole...

23. In terms of posts, yes, something could be done.

But unfortunately, he still has a vote-- and a mouth on the Senate floor to filibuster with.

3. "...start the debate"?
Start the debate?! Um, lieberman, the debate has been raging on and on and on. He has contributed absolutely nothing constructive and needs to go. Just demote him in every committee he sits on. Maybe he'll figure it out then, but I doubt it.

5. Why is anyone
surprised? Lyin' Joe has voted with the Republicans more often than not over the years, even when he was a neoconservative DLC faux-Democrat. He is a war-mongering "Bush Democrat," and a corporate whore.

8. Joe's got a big choice to make...
Lieberman knows that if he joins in a filibuster, he's going to lose his chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs -- and he really, really, really likes that job. That's always been the carrot the Democrats have held out to Lieberman. The stick, of course, is taking it away.

10. I don't like Joe either but
How do I reconcile my belief in the Democratic Party being a true big tent party, like the Republicans falsely claim to be, and not force people to toe the party line all the time, like the Republicans actually do, allowing tolerance for different beliefs, which the Republicans try not to allow, with my desire to slam Joe for not toeing the party line?

I'm conflicted about this. Help me out.

12. "Big Tent"
Edited on Tue Oct-27-09 06:22 PM by billh58
means listening to all sides, inviting differing opinions, and reaching a compromise through majority opinion rather than "towing the Party line." To join the ideological opposition against a measure which is so obviously beneficial to the majority of Americans, is NOT being "Independent" -- it is being an obstructionist and a corporate shill.

Lieberman, like most Republicans and DLC members, are in the pockets of Big Business, and seldom truly represent the interests of their voting constituents.

17. Yeah - you repukes are always conflicted. We need to get RID of LIEberman - NOW!!!
We are DEMOCRATS first and foremost - we still have the "big tent" - these war mongering idiots can still VOTE any way they want - what LIEberman is trying to do is PREVENT THE VOTE - but you repukes know that already, don't you...!!!

20. In this instance....
In this instance, it's not a case of Big Tentism. Liberman of course is entitled to vote against the final healthcare reform bill. However, as an independent, Lieberman chose to caucus with the Democrats. He gave his word to Harry Reid that he would not vote against the Dem caucus on procedural votes. In short, in exchange for his Homeland Security Chairmanship, Lieberman promised to vote with the Dem caucus to get bills to the Senate floor and promised not to vote with the Republicans to filibuster any bills. Lieberman should honor his promise. He's free to vote against the healthcare bill, but he should not join the Republicans in a filibuster.

In short, Lieberman is not being principled, he's just being weaselly.

13. with the "opt-out" provision there is no exuse for not supporting this bill.

Who would vote against something that is so NECESSARY. The health care system we have now will not last another 10 years.
