War is a barbaric enterprise unto itself. When nations make war upon each other the conscious decision is made to kill, or be killed. It brings out the latent ruthlessness of the human spirit, and once released, it cannot be controlled. The nation whose soldiers are the most ruthless will prevail.
Humanity is lost in an instant and no act becomes too dreadful, too depraved. It's the nature of war.
We've had so many wars. We've seen the truth about war time and again. And yet we still fight. Our leaders tell us that our cause is noble and just and that our enemy is vile so we march off smartly with flags waving and bands playing patriotic hymns.
What the hell have we learned?
