To save money, California State University won't take new students this spring
Published: Friday, Jul. 10, 2009

California State University campuses will not accept nearly all student applications for the 2010 spring term due to budget reductions, the 23-college system announced.

In addition, officials said that campuses on the quarter system have stopped accepting admission applications for the 2010 winter term.

CSU typically admits more than 35,000 freshmen, undergraduate transfer and graduate students during the spring term, according to the university.

The state system is trying to reduce enrollment by 40,000 students for 2010-2011. The decision to close spring admissions is part of that reduction effort.

1. Wow, like an Onion headline.
Will the Fire Department save water by not putting out fires?

2. CSU was a model for state universities! WHat is happening? How
will they fare better with fewer instead of more students? Seems upside down. more important: Does anyone have any hopes at all for our future? As goes California, so go the rest.

7. California truly used to be the golden state, in every
respect. That all started to change in the 1980's, resulting in today's train wreck. When I was a kid, education was paid for all the way through AA degrees, so this announcement underscores their fall off the pedestal as few others could. Irresponsible politicians have absolutely destroyed that state.

Unfortunately, their lack of leadership will effect all of us.

4. Unless it's medicine, math, rocket science, or English they should just charge you.....
... and give you the degree. Seriously, most of my friends are working outside their major, and their college degree was nothing more than a credential.

Besides, selling degrees that have no practical value is nothing new, divinity and art schools have been doing it for centuries.

6. You know an English major working in their field?
I'm shocked. Only the best of the best math majors do anything related to their studies.

Technology, engineering, agriculture, medicine, business, etc etc etc. Those degrees are worthwhile.

8. I only know two English majors, and they are both teachers.
I have a sibling who majored in German, has a masters in education and she works in computers on the mothership. My brother has an MBA and is actually a VP of marketing, but his degree isn't the reason he has the job, he worked his way up and his job is largely smart decision making having little to do with business theory. I haven't worked in my field in years. My dad worked in his field- architecture, but I have a friend with a degree in architecture who works in satellites.

5. I'm confused. A university can save money by turning down their clientele?
"In a cost cutting move, Dave Davies Ford announced that he will be closing his showroom and firing all his sales staff. 'The savings in air conditioning alone will be over $1000 per month, and those damned salesmen drink their weight in coffeee!"
