House Democrats Draw Line in the Sand on Public Option (Cenk @ Huffington Post)
Edited on Thu Jul-09-09 01:22 PM by ihavenobias

By Cenk Uygur

We talked to Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY) on last night. He gave us an important look into what happened inside the Democratic Caucus meeting on healthcare reform.

Rahm Emanuel came to speak to the House Democrats and said he was misinterpreted by the Wall Street Journal when they quoted him as being open to negotiating away the public option. The Progressive Caucus, with their 80 members, threw down the gauntlet and said they must have a "robust public option" in the bill in order to vote for it. And perhaps most importantly, the Blue Dogs seemed to step out of the way and agree to a public option.

These are important developments. And Rep. Yarmuth , "I think it would be almost impossible to get a bill out of the House without a strong public option on it."

It seems clear at this point that the Democrats in the House are drawing a line in the sand on the public option. In fact, when asked specifically, Rep. Yarmuth said, "I really think it is ."

Click this link to or you can .

Rep. Yarmuth also had a great quote on the importance of this healthcare reform effort:

This is the Super Bowl of legislation; this is Wimbledon; this is the U.S. Open if you're in a golf context or the Masters. This is the most important thing we'll do.

It sounds like the House Democrats are trying to encourage President Obama to do the right thing here. This is not time for half-measures that won't get the job done. If Obama is going to deliver on his promise of change, this is the the time and healthcare reform with a public option is the issue.

This is his legacy...(Click the article title at the top of the page for the entire piece with Huffington Post comments)

PS---It'll be interesting to see how many "unrecommend" ratings TYT postings get from people who hate Cenk, regardless of the content of a given TYT video/article.

1. they went beyond "encouraging" him
they said if he bailed on the public option he couldn't count on their support. That's what it takes.

10. It also takes phone calls and emails from everyone who knows we must have a public option.
THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN WITHOUT PEOPLE CALLING AND DEMANDING THE PUBLIC OPTION AND NO COMPROMISES. THE LOBBYISTS ARE OUT IN FORCE ON THE HILL (WELL, THE REPUBLICAN'S ARE ALWAYS THERE, BUT I MEAN THE DOCUMENTED (having a Rap sheet) CORPORATE LOBBYISTS). THEY WILL DEFEAT THE PUBLIC OPTION (OR GET IT MODIFIED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT WILL BE INEFFECTIVE - A FALSE PUBLIC OPTION - they're very good at this.)

4. People who hate Cenk that didn't even read the article or watch the video.

I won't name any names, but I'd put money down on a handful of haters who'll un-recommend TYT content every chance they get. Childish, obnoxious and one of the downsides of the new system (which has upside obviously).

But the post is great.

21. The funny thing is
the TYT clips I post are actually doing BETTER now but I'm still not a fan of unrecommend. How's that for being objective?

22. It makes sense. People are using the rec feature much more now.
Reccing and un-reccing, the likes of which have never been seen here on DU. :) That I think will slow down in time, but as long as the un-rec feature is there, people will continue to misuse it. Some will un-rec any TYT clip before viewing and others will un-rec any thread by people they don't like, regardless of the content. Or, what I've seen already, any position that a person takes that may be a little unpopular, even if it's correct, will go negative rec's.

And I don't give a damn how many whiners there are, calling the others thinned skinned and ganging up on a few. They're wrong. And this will chase away some more good writers.

Oh well.
