Remember When, 2003 Experts Say 'Dirty Bomb' Attack in U.S. Likely “Buy Duck Tape” Media Propaganda

War worries spur short rush on duct tape, plastic sheeting

Area hardware stores sold out stocks of duct tape and plastic sheets last week to customers bent on trying to protect themselves from possible terrorist poison gas or radioactive "dirty bomb" attacks.

They were responding to suggestions by U.S. Homeland Security Chief Tom Ridge and other government officials that they prepare "secure rooms" within their homes and tape over window gaps to protect themselves in the event of attacks. The comments came after the federal government upgraded the country's terror alert level to the second-highest level.
Feb. 12 seemed to be the peak day in the buying frenzy. "I would say that three of every four people that came in here left with duct tape or ...

'Dirty Bomb' a Fear in Scrubbed Flights

After the U.S. government warned Saturday of "a specific and credible threat," British Airways canceled two London-Washington round trips and a London-Miami flight, while Air France grounded two Paris-Washington flights. Those flights were scheduled for Sunday and today.

The Media does matter, they work very hard at forming public opinion, called propaganda used by the bush administration like a bull wipe when ever they felt like scarring the bajessus out of everyone. Boogieman here, Boogieman there, Boogieman everywhere we are the only ones that can protect you as they started spying on everyone to braking more laws then Charles Manson.

The goal is to avoid fresh air for a little while. But only a little while.

Soon after we moved to our current address, there was some sort of accident maybe two miles from where we live. A chemical spill. Our son was under a year old.

We were told to stay indoors for an hour or so, to close the windows and, if possible, to turn off the air conditioning. In other words, to avoid fresh air from the outside. During that interval the noxious gas would blow through our area or dissipate. For that hour, it was deemed unsafe to be outside. However, the air in our apartment would be safe for at least an hour. After that time, we could open the windows or crank up the AC since the fresh air outside would be safe to bring inside.

In the event of something truly noxious in small quanties, sealing the windows and vents would have been the thing to do since even the air that leaked in could be dangerous.

However, the advice requires knowing when to tape up things to keep the poison out. It also assumes that most toxic gases would dissipate in an hour or two (most would) or that any radiologic material would settle to the ground fairly quickly.

This is on par with keeping your tires inflated, IMO. Both are good advice, but when taken to be a panacea both are utterly ludicrous. Of course, if you have a modicum of good will for the advice-giver, you won't take either to be a suggested panacea. Sadly, far too many took one or the other to be precisely that.

3. I have wondered since
if each of the big terrorist scares were prompted by some poor Gitmo prisoner's 'confession' invented to stop the torture.
