... The enablers are those who sit back, often behind a radio microphone or in front of a television camera, spouting their rhetoric of political hate based on ethnicity and class. Often these enablers are well paid, well educated, manipulative and adept at stirring up the political emotions of the masses. But they are also the first to run for cover when the ugliness they facilitate spins out of control.
Need an example? Recently Rush Limbaugh said on his national radio show that President Obama and God have just one thing in common: Neither of them has a U.S. birth certificate. This issue has been reviewed over and over, but Limbaugh does not like the fact that the president is a citizen, so he won't let it go.
What happens then? Some nut in Utah threatens the president's life, gets in his car with a stash of guns headed to who knows where, with the FBI hot on the trail. It should not be a surprise that people already on the fringe are fragile enough to be pushed over the edge by those espousing political hate. I, for one, am sick and tired of this type of unchallenged intolerance by right-wing conservative extremists.
Do not think for one minute that this ideology only presents itself on the national stage. It is increasingly visible on the local level, with some voicing their displeasure ...
