Daughter of PR Becomes Justice in America!
Edited on Tue May-26-09 09:19 AM by Stingo
Everything is possible in America, even the daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants being named to a seat on the United States Supreme Court. Forget for a moment the attacks the Republicans will launch against Sotomayor, who in many ways embodies the American ideal. Let us instead celebrate with that song from West Side Story, “America.” any bets on whether the Broadway show will get some new lyrics this week?

3. Technically they were not immigrants
But Puerto Ricans were certainly treated as such historically.

8. If her parents arrived on our shores before the Spanish American War, then they were immigrants.
PR didn't become a territory until AFTER that conflict. Anyone arriving after that war was a citizen.

However, that said, her parents would have had to have been AMAZINGLY long-lived (and astoundingly fertile in VERY old age) to have managed that trick, eh?

The SA War happened, what, in 1898???

Whoever is hauling out the "immigrant" word is just, er, dumb.

5. Don't tell Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Obviously) that.
She says they're illegal immigrants.
