Feingold Plans Hearing On Obama's Detention Policy
by Marc Ambinder

http://politics.theatlantic.com/2009/05/feingold_plans_hearing_on_obamas_detention_policy.php

Sen. Russ Feingold plans a hearing in June about President Obama's plan to seek "prolonged detention" without trial for some of the Guantanamo detainees. In a letter to Obama, Feingold writes that while he appreciates Obama's "good faith desire to at least enact a statutory basis for such a regime, any system that permits the government to indefinitely detain individuals without charge or without a meaningful opportunity to have accusations against them adjudicated by an impartial arbiter violates basic American values and is likely unconstitutional."

1. Who would have thought that a Senator would have to do this against...
President Obama? This idea that Obama has hatched is not sitting well with many me thinks...

3. An honest wrestling, and last resort as solution, I'm sure.

2. Obama expects congressional oversight. The human rights groups who don't consider security at all
more the problem. We've been left a real mess, insufficient records, creating criminals because of the treatment and detention at all, and that war time does create rationale for the imperfect tribunal.

Just think if we never went into Iraq, with only a limited response in Afghanistan.

4. In that light, Obama should be pushing like hell for investigations and indictments...
then. From many eyes, he seems to be standing in the way of justice for the entire Bush Administration.

5. Just that the single-mindedness of revenge, er justice, overwhelms everything else. I wish more
people, groups, were on board, beyond jobs and personal survival. Obama is in a tough place of doing something meraningful with his time there.

7. Even if we released all, what is it 400 now, of these folks back to where they were
captured, they couldn't do one-tenth as much damage to our troops as the damage being done by killing of innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan. The human rights groups are right to raise hell about how we're holding these people without trials.

6. Thanks for posting
I just sent Finegold's letter to Rachael Maddoew since she did a segment on her Thursday show regarding this.
