We’ve Got a Pattern: Police Murdered in Okaloosa
Joshua Cartwright, clearly mentally ill, murdered two policemen today. Shades of Richard Poplawski, at least int eh fact that they were both mightily scared of the Obama Administration. The right wingers will whine that they are being painted with the same brush, but their big protest is in Iowa, where people struggle to love one another.

1. "clearly mentally ill" ... I'm trying to be supportive, but where is that diagnosis supported by
anything other than opinion?

I think the people that tortured others for a living are SICK mother f#ckers, but nobody is saying that.

So this guy got a lot of bad info and shot some police. That doesn't mean he's "clearly mentally ill" ... not in modern terms.

3. Nowhere do I impugn those who are mentally ill
But this man is ill, no doubt. He is dangerous and an example of a large body of mentally ill wingnuts, but that does not imply that all mental illness leads to violence and wingnuttery.

5. Associating me and others with legitimate diagnosis with that dickhead
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 11:03 PM by cliffordu
is really the worst type of bigotry.

He might even have a diagnosis, but I'd like to see one that turns regular people into homicidal maniacs or suicides at a gun range where mom killed brother:

The inability of normal people to cope with a psychotic turn of events like that murder/suicide creates outcomes like this.

6. You are seeing this too narrowly.
Take two individuals, one with intestinal flu and the other with intestinal cancer. The argument could be made that they both have problems with their digestive tracts, without equating the two ailments. It is safe to say that people like Jim D. Adkisson, Paul Hill, Richard Poplawski, or Timothy McVeigh (to name a few) had or have real mental issues, which were certainly exploited by the right-wing hate machine. That doesn't mean, in any way, that they have anything to do with you.

7. Well....
"Timothy McVeigh (to name a few) had or have real mental issues, which were certainly exploited by the right-wing hate machine. That doesn't mean, in any way, that they have anything to do with you."

Which is my fucking point exactly. Maybe a new label needs to be invented...Nutcases, hate filled assholes, infantile self centered easily led scumbags.

Simply stating that they are mentally ill paints a whole subculture of undeserving people with that implied threat that we could all "snap" and kill people and chop them up, or shoot up a movie theatre...whatever.

I've been turned down for housing for being mentally ill because of attitudes like this.

fear of mentally ill people is perpetuated by generalities like the OP.

New book on Columbine out- seems those two fuckfaces were just normal kids, not monsters, trenchcoat mafia or any of the other horror stories that were supposed to define them.

Just normal upper middle class mass murderers.

9. Perhaps a new label or specific classification...
...would be a good start to ending discrimination. I do agree with you wholeheartedly that people should be better informed so as to not discriminate. While I was living in Germany, a small community outside of Berlin was planning to open up a home for HIV+ children. The neighborhood was up in arms, some even were scared that the water would be contaminated. One night 4 people entered the construction site and burned it down. Afterwards, the organization that wanted to help these children decided to move somewhere else. It is just as ridiculous to believe that all people with mental issues are ticking time bombs and those who make that generalization illustrate serious deficits within our society pertaining to the information given. I'm sorry for what you have had to go through. I've had enough experience personally and professionally with mental issues to know the difference.

Hopefully, you and I will see the day when this is finally accepted.

8. Hey, what about Adkisson?
You can read about him on Fox News:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,392081,00.html

"It appears that what brought him to this horrible event was his lack of being able to obtain a job, his frustration over that, and his stated hatred for the liberal movement,”

Also read about William Edward Hickman and Ayn Rand:

http://michaelprescott.net/hickman.htm

Basically what you have in the conservative philosophy is an exultation of the individual as an entity free from social restraints, who CAN be a really brilliant self-starting CEO, OR a serial killer. That's what they seem to have a problem grasping, to be honest.
