By Evan Brandt,
[email protected]It seems a puzzling choice for Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin to question Barack Obama's devotion to his country on the basis of his associations.
To his credit, John McCain has begun to distance himself from the verbal violence Palin's repeated insinuations are generating. It remains to be seen if he will be able to exercise equal control over his running mate.
The quote at the center of this attack, and from which no one paying attention to this campaign can escape, is this portion of Palin's stump speech: Obama is "not a man who sees America as you and I see America. We see America as a force for good in this world. We see America as a force for exceptionalism. Our opponents see America as imperfect enough to pal around with terrorists who would bomb their own country."
She is referring, or course, to Obama's service on two community boards with Bill Ayers, a college professor, educator and one-time Chicago Citizen of the Year. When Obama was 8 years old, Ayers was a 1960s radical and was involved with plans to bomb targets in the U.S.
