WOW! To McCain from former supporter: "You are unleashing the monster
...of American hatred and prejudice, to the peril of all of us."

Frank Schaeffer
Posted October 10, 2008

Senator John McCain: If your campaign does not stop equating Sen. Barack Obama with terrorism, questioning his patriotism and portraying Mr. Obama as "not one of us," I accuse you of deliberately feeding the most unhinged elements of our society the red meat of hate, and therefore of potentially instigating violence.

At a Sarah Palin rally, someone called out, "Kill him!" At one of your rallies, someone called out, "Terrorist!" Neither was answered or denounced by you or your running mate, as the crowd laughed and cheered. At your campaign event Wednesday in Bethlehem, Pa., the crowd was seething with hatred for the Democratic nominee - an attitude encouraged in speeches there by you, your running mate, your wife and the local Republican chairman.

Shame!

John McCain: In 2000, as a lifelong Republican, I worked to get you elected instead of George W. Bush. In return, you wrote an endorsement of one of my books about military service. You seemed to be a man who put principle ahead of mere political gain.

You have changed. You have a choice: Go down in history as a decent senator and an honorable military man with many successes, or go down in history as the latest abettor of right-wing extremist hate.

"Crazy for God"
He didn't really turn against the evangelical movement until he moved to America from Switzerland. This is where he encountered James Dobson, Pat Robertson, etc. and learned the what the real right-wing is all about.

26. It would be comforting to know that the "kill him!" types were plants.
Unfortunately, I think they are the average, run of the mill, "Joe six-packs" who spew the hate. :scared: The RNC does not have to go recruit them.

Where have they been the last 7.5 years? When did they speak up for the downtrodden? As long as their precious market was doing well, they seemed to be a bit conservative with their conscience. Fuck'm. This socialist doesn't need such fellow travellers. My conscience is clean.

plain and simple. All you have to do is watch the crowds. Those who call for the death of a candidate, those who hear and do nothing, are terrorists, as far as I am concerned. So it appears to be that the GOP is nothing but a terrorist front. Wanna be a terrorist? Join the GOP. fuckers

The truth shall set you free! I agree 1,000,000 %. Never known a GOPer who didn't believe in resolving a conflict by killing someone. Almost a requirement to be racist, sexist and just fuckin'stupid. Bob Herberts recent NYT editorial includes an incredulity over how wrong repukes have been about everything!!! Terrorism is their strongsuit, they bomb health service providers, kill doctors, blokkade islands, deny reproduction education, rob widows and orphans. I feel like Basil Fawlty, apoplectic and conflicted at those dirty filthy, scum-thinking pseudo-humans.

Think about it: When the repubs lose THIS race, it will be more than a loss for the presidency. It will be viewed as a cultural loss, an "America as they know it" loss thanks to the likes of palin, hannity, limbaugh et. al. The irony is most of the RR don't even like mccain.

I have heard this sentiment elsewhere. The monster is unleashed, and it is bigger than we think. Unbeatable? No. But certainly something that requires immediate and serious attention. We need to call them on this and force them to either denounce it or endorse it openly. Obama should bring this up again and again.

stirring up this hate-fest. NOBODY gets a pass. They don't get to pin it on McCain and Palin alone. This has been their MO for YEARS, and they don't get to play the innocent, aggrieved party now.

They have not changed their stripes.. they are still doing the terrorist association and name calling in different ways, Do not be fooled. McCain is still as filthy and nasty as ever.

I'm so glad to see someone else calling him out on his shit. It CANNOT be just that Mccain offers some lame defense of Obama once or twice at an event, they need to stop their ADS that say so (like the new one running that clearly says "Obama worked with terorrists" and lied about it, they need to stop their emails to reporters that came out just a day ago trying to link MICHELLE to Ayers/terrorists, to the McCain employees in the media blaming Obama for critizing the wonderful McCain supporters.

49. Frank is a good guy...
Frank Schaeffer broke with the Repugs in 2006 and, in an Op-Ed piece, endorsed Jim Webb after Macaca-Man tried to use one of Webb's books as evidence that he was a pervert. I sent him a supportive email and he was nice enough to reply to me personally. He is a good example of the difference between a conservative and a reactionary. The Repugs are reactionaries. Moderates who vote Repug are giving reactionaries unearned and dangerous legitimacy. McCain-Palin's recent nastiness is merely an example of reactionaries saying publicly what they have always believed in private. Radical reactionaries need to be re-marginalized. Hopefully, Frank is an example of a larger trend of conservatives splitting with the radical-right.

If he makes the right call, he can go do as a decent man. If he fucks up, he'll go down as a Neocon Fascist enabler along with Bushco. If it were me, I'd choose the high road, but we'll see. The Palin path is open. If he chooses that path, then he fails and we might all die. So be it. We will live or die on this election.
