Palin is toast in one word: Headship
All it takes is one reporter or one surrogate to ask her what the Doctrine of Headship means, and if she believes it. If she were to takeover from McCain for any reason, HER HUSBAND would be running the country.

If you don't believe me, ask anybody in the religious right.

There's lots of material about this, it's no secret, but here's two sources I found in just looking quickly...

"Control Freaks and the Women Who Love Them"
http://www.newmanmag.com/display.php?id=818

"Christianity and Domestic Violence"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity_and_domestic_violence

The Religious Right can't run away from this because all of the well-known leaders endorse this concept. Two quotes from Pat Robertson, but this one's the money-quote:

"I know this is painful for the ladies to hear, but if you get married, you have accepted the headship of a man, your husband. Christ is the head of the household and the husband is the head of the wife, and that's the way it is, period..." (Pat Robertson, The 700 Club television program, January 8, 1992).

And this is the Religious Right's view about women's rights, maybe Palin should be asked whether she agrees:

"The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians."

Do PUMAs think we need that kind of viewpoint one heart-attack away from the Presidency? If Hillary-ites think the RR is kidding on that statement, they're not.

2. and then there's this
In the aftermath of the Walt Monegan firing, one question keeps surfacing over and over again; why does the governor's husband, Todd Palin appear to hold so much power?

4. Seems that's occurring in Alaska
I've read of her husband sitting in on official meetings and him being copied on emails that she now claims executive privilege on.

8. Actually, I think the PUMAS are a mythological
imaging of the right wing. Does anyone here actually know one? I know some women that were for Hillary, but the minute she dropped out, they quickly switched to Barack.

11. I know several
unfortunately -- including one otherwise (you would think) sweet old lady who, right after Oprah came out for Obama, said, to my shock and dismay, "Well, I'll never watch that fucking Ubangi again."

She still has her Hillary sign up.

18. for any silly PUMAS
simply show them the video of Palin totally dissing Hillary. Actually 2 videos, one in which she calls Hillary a "whiner" who should have "just worked harder" and apparently didn't "know what she was gittin' into." And the 2nd from this morning, where she claimed she was going to pick up where Hillary left off.

If they *truly* are pissed about Hillary not getting picked, the video's should make them ready to kill a certain arrogant little snotnose locl beauty not quite queen.

one-on-one meetings, and how he's involved in that scandal, and how he's even cc'd on emails.
These are private emails that can't even be turned over in cases involving Right to Info act.

I'll try to find the link.
It's pretty scary.

15. Wow, thank you, I didn't even know about that,
I only know about the Religious Right's beliefs. So she's not even hiding it, then? Now you know the reason for his input and presence.

It would be even easier and faster to end any consideration of her, with this.

12. Not meant as an insult, I don't believe more than a handful would fall for it.
Just a hypothetical "if statement". I meant the logic of this strategy is ludicrous. HRC's women supporters seem to me to at least be well-informed on where the RR is coming from... we'll see if that's so. If not, they should know about this.

But thank you for your manners and hair-splitting over words at the same time.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. I wonder how long it will be before someone finds film of her either rolling in the floor speaking in tongues and/or participating in an exorcism? Those are usually part and parcel with strict belief in Headship.

17. Shadow Governor?
... why does the governor's husband, Todd Palin appear to hold so much power? ...

The stories started last year when Representative Ralph Samuels told me about going into a meeting, he thought would be private, with Governor Sarah Palin. Much to his surprise, Todd Palin was there and proceeded to sit through the entire meeting.

Other lawmakers have shared similar stories and were shocked at how inappropriate Todd's presence was at meetings with the governor. Yesterday on the Dan Fagan Show, Representative Jay Ramras mentioned that Todd was working lawmakers offices during the ACES debate ...

The most alarming indication of Todd Palin's reach into state government came just yesterday ...

20. I was just browsing that site earlier tonight ....
bizarre stuff on this Palin character and her political, family ties up there in Alaska. Corruption, greed, strange payoffs .... etc... etc... Wonder if McCain just vetted her by just reading about her on Wikipedia? (of course before she edited her profile there) He's known for that ya know.

26. incredible stats on pastors & domestic abuse counseling:
* 26 percent of pastors polled said they normally tell a woman being abused that she should continue to submit, "and to trust that God would honor her action by either stopping the abuse or giving her the strength to endure it."

* About 25 percent of the respondents said a lack of submissiveness in the wife is what triggered the violence in the first place. In other words, these pastors believe that the abuse is actually the woman's fault. The women are told that if they would "learn to submit," the violence will stop.

* A majority of the pastors said it is better for a woman to tolerate some level of violence in the home--even though it is "not God's perfect will"--than to seek separation that might end in divorce. (Is it "better" even if the woman is killed, maimed or raped?)

* 71 percent of the ministers said they would never advise a battered wife to leave her husband or separate because of abuse, and 92 percent said they would never counsel her to seek divorce.

28. Are we sure that she buys into this?
Just because the Religious Right votes as a bloc doesn't mean they agree on every single doctrinal question. Maybe Pentecostals don't adhere to this doctrine; maybe some do but the Assembly of God does not.

I'm not trying to defend her crazy, fundamentalist sect. All I'm saying is that we should not operate on the assumption that the Religious Right is a monolithic group with beliefs that are absolutely uniform. If that were the case, they would all be one big denomination called "the Religious Right."
