You do not want Bush to be a fireman in your town
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A5704-2003Jul30.html

Read the article about Liberia and you will understand.
Bush appears to be doing something without doing anything about Liberia.

Rwanda all over again right before our eyes. One question we must ask ourselves, "WWCD"
"What Would Clinton Do?"

1. Sorry to say...
... but if the example is Rwanda, Clinton did nothing at all.

It's not a good example, if you're trying to boost Clinton's African policy over the current administration's.

Cheers.

4. I agree Clinton did nothing
Edited on Thu Jul-31-03 07:45 AM by fertilizeonarbusto
but that was mostly because he had no political capital to do this at the time, thanks to Newtie and his gang. Remember all the carrying on about the "irresponsibility" in getting involved in the former Yugoslavia? Multiply that by ten and add a big dollop of racism and you'll get the Rethugs' (who held and hold the purse strings in Congress) response to any Clinton-inspired action in Rwanda-or at least so sez Sid Blumenthal and he ought to know.
I'd love to see what Clinton says about this sad episode in his memoirs-ought to be a corker.

2. Also -- Bu$h* would make himself a hero by setting fires; i.e. by MIHOP.
And then "saving" us from them.

3. Maybe I should have explained Rwanda and Clinton better
Clinton said that the US would not allow another Rwanda from occurring, meaning that Clinton would do something about Liberia.
Clear things up?

6. Clinton let Rwanda proceed...
... just as Bush is letting Liberia proceed. I see no substantive difference. I see no clarification between the policies.

Clinton may have felt entitled to speak for his successors, but no president is bound by his predecessor's speeches.

Molly Ivins says of Bush, "watch what he does, not what he says." That's good advice with regard to _all_ politicians. Too many people trust what politicians say, and then make excuses for or ignore what they do. My standard is to judge them all on their records.

Clinton behaved as or more badly with regard to Rwanda as Bush is now behaving toward Liberia. Rwanda was Clinton's chance to behave altruistically, and he failed. Liberia is Bush's, and he will likely fail, too.

Stop protecting a cherished memory and think about what Rwanda and Liberia actually mean to the government of this country.

Cheers.

7. One reason Clinton went in to Kosovo
was to prevent another Rwanda.

Again, Clinton would be acting because of the promise he made after Rwanda.

Liberia means a lot to this country, especially since they have had ties to Al Qaeda.

9. gee another clinton bash
clinton couldn`t do much even if he wanted. there was no way we could have sent enough troops there to stop the war. even if we did who`s side would we have been on? stuck in the middle of a tribal blood feud would not be practical militarly. sometimes there is nothing you can do but try to pick up the pieces and rebuild. from what i have read there is a slow rebuilding of the countries involved. many people are being brought to justice in an evolving court system that deals with the murderers. liberia is another story,we can stop bloodshed esp in the capital but bush refuses to..yet another bush failure.
