I Don't Think Mitt Romney Is A Racist
I Don't Think Mitt Romney Is A Racist
By Cenk Uygur

I don't think Mitt Romney is a racist, I think he just plays one on TV. He has repeatedly said that he would not have a Muslim in his cabinet. Does this mean he hates Muslims? No, it means Republican primary voters hate Muslims.

Mitt Romney is the greasiest man in America. He is so greasy, he shines. And in that shine you can see the reflection of his audience.

Romney is desperate to please. He will say or do anything to win the crowd, whichever crowd he is trying to win over at the time. When it was a more liberal audience in Massachusetts, he loved gay rights, respected a woman's right to choose, was ambivalent about Reagan and was more liberal than Ted Kennedy. Now that it is a Republican primary audience, he is for doubling Guantanamo, enhanced interrogation techniques, more unnecessary wars and yes, hating Muslims.

Does Romney actually believe that gay Americans should have rights? Who knows? Is he pro-choice or pro-life? Who knows, who cares? He is whatever people want him to be. I don't think he particularly gives a shit. All he wants is that brass ring. He is the Gollum of American politics...

1. And This Is Different From the Rest How?
I'm hoping for a candidate with some principles that don't include Win at Any Cost.

8. Like Bush doesn't hate black people, but he will gladly let them drown if it will help a friend make
a buck.

3. Rebublican McMormon Puppet
I can just see Carl Rove with his hand up Mitt's arse making him talk and move his mouth like he has something to say. Carl Rove was raised in SLC and I don't know that he's a Mormon, but he has all the skill and careful obfuscation of words and manipulation that the Mormon leaders instill in their mouthpieces and doo-doo-gooders.

The fact that Mitt was raised in the Mormon church which has a history of deep racisim toward anyone of color and a funky explanation for the lineage of Native Americans, the decendents of Noah, the curse of Cain, and even better, "that when "Darkies" join the church and become indoctrinated, they start to become white and delightsome" leads one to believe that Mitt has been taught throughout his life that people of color are inferior. He may try to use the well practiced voice of the present "Prophet" Gordon B. Hinkley when he told Larry King, "I don't know that we believe THAT", but history and previous "Prophets" preached and reinforced this bullshit for all their members. Revisionist history is such a big part of the Mormon spin that Mitt can't help but change his story to fit the moment. It's in the blood, and Mitt's blood is true blue Mormon (TBM), making him a charletan by association if anything else.

Here is a (deranged) quote from Spencer W. Kimball on the subject:

"I saw a striking contrast in the progress of the Indian people today as against that of only fifteen years ago. Truly the scales of darkness are falling from their eyes, and they are fast becoming a white and delightsome people....
The day of the Lamanites is nigh. For years they have been growing delightsome, and they are now becoming white and delightsome, as they were promised. In this picture of the twenty Lamanite missionaries, fifteen of the twenty were as light as Anglos;...The children in the home placement program in Utah are often lighter than their brothers and sisters in the hogans on the reservation.

At one meeting a father and mother and their sixteen-year-old daughter were present, the little member girl...was several shades lighter than her parents...There was the doctor in a Utah city who for two years had had an Indian boy in his home who stated that he was some shades lighter than the younger brother just coming into the program from the reservation. These young members of the Church are changing to whiteness and to delightsomeness. One white elder jokingly said that he and his companion were donating blood regularly to the hospital in the hope that the process might be accelerated.

The day of the Lamanites has come....today the dark clouds are dissipating." (Improvement Era, December 1960. pages 922-23)

5. I don't think Mormons are any more racist than any other organized religion--
they were late in coming around in terms of attitude, perhaps, but when I lived in Utah, they didn't strike me as any different than any other predominantly white population. I don't think Romney's a racist at heart, either--just a weenie.

6. Good and Bad, and a little bit of dog poop
I'm a Utahrd and love the landscape and even some of the people, but while most are sweet and friendly on the outside, many of the devout Mormons (the mainstream) are latently very racist and very naive about the world outside the Zion Curtain. I lost count of the times I've heard "Locals" say stuff like, "Well, THOSE PEOPLE (referring to all middle easterners) just can't get along and they fight because their religion (as if there's only one for 2 billion people)is cursed by God", or "They are the evildoers", or "They are decendents of Cain and will always fight", and plenty of other crap. It's taught from the pulpit, reinforced in the meetings, and expressed in casual conversation. It's not uncommon for some to suggest that the AIDS crisis in Africa or across the world is due to "Gods curse" on gays or cultures which don't enforce the same moral standards that Mormons believe they uphold. I realize this is rampant in many Christian circles, but it is ill informed and racist and hardly reflects all the challenges and circumstances that cause such diseases.

Mitt Romney will say whatever the polls tell him to say and his appeal is purely a cosmetic mirror of what the Republicans wish they looked like. He's a manniquin that can be propped up in any window and dressed to look and sound like whatever they want him to look and sound like.
