was the name of Howard Zinn's mid 1960's book about the people of SNCC, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, who were organizing throughout the US south. It was the only thing I'd seen in print by a white person that showed understanding of what was really happening. It cut through the negatively ignorant propaganda of the established media and told what of SNCC was really up to. His insightful writing then added in large part to the impetus that caused me to join their efforts.
He was right then. Those he wrote about did achieve the organization and social revolution they sought. They did bring about the fall of the humpty dumpty of segregation, and that egg lies still broken. His article referred to here should give us heart. It cuts through the frustration of fruitlessness we feel now about our efforts to topple the corporate empire of which the Bush administration is a symbol. He tells us here that the egg has fallen many times in circumstances of similar frustration. And as many times before, continued pushing will take it over the edge.
One song we sang then went in part
My daddy was a freedom fighter,
And I'm my daddy's son,
And I'll stick with this struggle,
Until every battle's won.
Hold on, Hold on,
Keep your eyes on the prize,
Hold on.
Zinn tells us here that we did it before, and we will do it again.
