Maureen Dowd: Daddies in a Panic, and Mommies, too

http://roziusunbound.blogspot.com/2007/04/maureen-dowd-daddies-in-panic-and-mommy.html

The Times’s science section devoted itself yesterday to the topic of Desire, the myriad ways in which the human mind causes the body to get turned on.
--------

As Natalie Angier, The Times’s biology expert, noted, research has shown that women differed from men “in the importance they accorded a man’s physical appearance, with many expressing a comparatively greater likelihood of being aroused by evidence of talent or intelligence — say, while watching a man deliver a great speech.”

This could explain why many Republican women are so frustrated. They have been deprived of the bristly excitement of hearing their men on the stump delivering great speeches for quite some time now.

The Daddy Party, sick with desire for a daddy, is like a lost child. John McCain, handcuffed to the Surge, announced yesterday he has the support of Henry Kissinger. Why not just drink poison? As the Boston Globe columnist Joan Vennochi slyly said, “Leave it to Mitt Romney to shoot himself in the foot with a gun he doesn’t own.”

--------------
Not sure how much I agree with the rest of it, but it's nice to see Dowd's pen once again dipped in acid.

1. flawed premise
because some women can be turned on by brilliance and talent, does not mean that republican women are turned on by brilliance and talent. I still remember Republican women saying Bush was hot. Bush has never in his entire life exhibited brilliance or talent.

2. And the only time Bush is "hot" is after a day spent clearing
brush - and I don't mean in the sexy sense.

3. I'd have to ay that republican women are turned on by dollar signs
and once they have their hands tucked deeply in the pockets of their intended then the lust generally wanes.

4. Reports give him a certain amount of charisma in person
although I am unable to verify that through personal experience.

Glib charisma can be interpreted as eloquence.

One of the great ironies is that men want to be loved for their godlike bodies and women want to be loved for their minds and it's generally the reverse that happens and never the twain shall meet.

The women in the GOP are realizing that "daddy" is a glib moron pushed out in front as a spokesmodel and that the real power resides with incredibly unsympathetic figures like Norquist, Cheney, Rove, and the rest of the scoundrels who rarely appear on camera by their own choosing.

Dowd's got a point, in other words.

6. Okay, if no one else will point it out...
...I will. Best political barb of the season so far: “Leave it to Mitt Romney to shoot himself in the foot with a gun he doesn’t own.”

I laughed out loud at that one, truly witty!
