MAUREEN DOWD: Daffy Does Doom
Daffy Does Doom

By MAUREEN DOWD

WASHINGTON

Dick Durbin went to the floor of the Senate on Thursday night to denounce the vice president as “delusional.”

It was shocking, and Senator Durbin should be ashamed of himself.

Delusional is far too mild a word to describe Dick Cheney. Delusional doesn’t begin to capture the profound, transcendental one-flew-over daftness of the man.

Has anyone in the history of the United States ever been so singularly wrong and misguided about such phenomenally important events and continued to insist he’s right in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary?

It requires an exquisite kind of lunacy to spend hundreds of billions destroying America’s reputation in the world, exhausting the U.S. military, failing to catch Osama, enhancing Iran’s power in the Middle East and sending American kids to train and arm Iraqi forces so they can work against American interests.

1. Today's is the best column she's written in a long time.
She's really been "phoning it in" for months now (snarky type stuff: fun, but with her bully pulpit she should have been ripping new ones every week). I'm glad she's on it now, but I've been disappointed with her for a while. Come on Maureen, more of this, please!!

3. WOW! thanks for the link, I read the next article by Joseph Galloway..and
..just shit...our troops will be dying in record numbers if what he says is going to be the 'plan' to secure Baghdad. Our troops are going to be STAYING in Iraqi police and army posts, inside Baghdad neighborhoods?

I think boosh is afraid the 'Memorial to American Soldiers' who fought in Iraq is going to be too small and he is looking forward to something more along the lines of the Viet Nam Memorial in DC?

4. Is it lunacy or sociopathic greed?
Doesn't Cheney want to just take over the world and all the oil?

5. it was a whole network of nuts and incompetents.
It took more than one inmate--the whole leadership was rotten. I'm reading Fiasco and the incompetence is truly stunning. Each reinforced the other's assumption that Iraq would be far easier to conquer, and whenever someone stepped out of that thinking and into reality, they were either ignored or pushed out. Wolfowitz, Feith and Rumsfeld were the worst. Bremer absolutely the worst choice to lead the occupation. Just about everything he did made things worse.

Cheney has been a cheerleader behind the scenes, and probably the one that keeps * on the "right" page of delusional thinking. It's an amazing thing to contemplate: how a bunch of knuckleheads could get together and go forward in such an incompetent way because they found themselves with the power to do so. And now they are in it so deeply that they won't/can't reverse themselves.

6. Cheney's a psychopath, not psychotic
As long as he is allowed to get away with mass-murder, his delusions of grandeur are not really delusions. "He's above the law", "he's above having to explain himself"--these are in effect TRUE propositions until we prove that he's not.

10. Read further down the page. Paul Krugman's 'On Being Partisan'

He spells out exactly the problem we face with the republican junta. Just what the Democrats faced when FDR took over the White House.

This should be required reading for all our politicians.

And "Class War" should be on all their lips 24/7. Americans are finally starting to see it for what it is and are angry about it. We should be stoking that anger, not trying to play nice with those that want to bury us. Play the cards right and the republican party could be anathema to Americans for decades to come. Just emphasize the connection between * and the republican party. It can be as hated as he is.

12. ..You must have a real talent for derangement to stay wrong every step of the way,

I do not think it hits him that he is wrong!!

......You must have a real talent for derangement to stay wrong every step of the way, to remain in complete denial about Iraq’s civil war, to have a total misunderstanding of Arab culture, to be completely oblivious to the American mood and to be absolutely blind to how democracy works.

In a democracy, when you run a campaign that panders to homophobia by attacking gay marriage and then your lesbian daughter writes a book about politics and decides to have a baby with her partner, you cannot tell Wolf Blitzer he’s “out of line” when he gingerly raises the hypocrisy of your position.

Mr. Cheney acts more like a member of the James gang than the Jefferson gang. Asked by Wolf what would happen if the Senate passed a resolution critical of The Surge, Scary Cheney rumbled, “It won’t stop us.”

Such an exercise in democracy, he noted, would be “detrimental from the standpoint of the troops.”

13. I think the disconnect here, is that we're all giving Dick Cheney way
too much credit. We're assuming that the man had noble intentions for following a wrong course. That, there, is our huge mistake. He never had noble intentions. It was always about the profit. So, now that he's about to get caught, he's just confusing us by throwing everything at us, including the kitchen sink. He just means to slow us down and if we can see passed that, and realize that he is last Century's and this Century's greatest criminal mind, I think we will understand the true bolts inside that noggin of his.
