A SURGE TOO FAR
My LOCAL paper. I am stunned:

Bush's own generals — at least before he reshuffled the top ranks in recent days — were against it. Iraq is aflame with civil war and daily sectarian violence based on hatreds that go back centuries. American troops are merely targets — for all sides. Roadside bombs account for 45 percent of all U.S. deaths in Iraq — more than any other cause. More soldiers die traveling down roads than in direct firefights with the enemy. Adding more troops to this situation only adds more American targets and offers little meaningful strategic advantage. Iraq is out of control. More troops will not help, say any number of experts.

The United States need not call the war a loss. Call it a win, if you want. We toppled a brutal, hated dictator who has now been executed by his own people. Declare victory and pull out, to borrow a phrase from the Vietnam era. Trust us, the truth has been stretched far more than that in defense of this war.
