Drop dead headline killed his Prez bid

It was the headline seen around the world and it probably cost Gerald Ford the 1976 election.

"Ford to City: Drop Dead," the iconic Daily News headline of Oct. 30, 1975, was the brainchild of the paper's late managing editor, William Brink.

Growing angry as he watched the President's preliminary rejection of a New York City bailout plan in a nationally televised speech, Brink knew it demanded a strong headline.

"What I wanted to do was to get across the idea that Ford hadn't just declined to help us, he had in effect consigned us to the scrap heap," Brink told the New Yorker a few days later as the magazine reconstructed the making of a historic headline.

4. Characteristically, The Daily News is giving itself too much credit.

I doubt if New York would have gone for Ford in any event.

5. And this slogan has been used in many areas
when a government body has ignored the needs and opinions of a community.
