Rahm to oil industry: The honeymoon is over
Rahm to oil industry: The honeymoon is over
by John in DC - 12/10/2006 12:38:00 PM

This is what you get when no-more-nonsense, tough-as-nails Democrats take over the congress: real accountability (and hopefully lower gas prices). From the NYT:

House Democratic leaders vowed Friday to pursue a broad overhaul of tax breaks and other subsidies to oil companies in January, saying that their first target would be an investigation of how the government collects billions of dollars in royalties on oil and gas produced on federal property....

“This is a warning to oil and gas companies,” said Representative Rahm Emanuel, Democrat of Illinois and chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. “When you get a Democratic Congress, you are going to get a cop on the beat.”

1. Republicans say ending the tax breaks means higher prices for us...
:wtf:

We're already paying the taxes to give them their subsidies.

And we are told to support ourselves.

Of all industries, the oil industry does not need any support from us. Not right now, at those profits. They seem to be supporting themselves just fine already.

2. And cops on the beat have been known to accept gratuities
Just read about Frank Serpico's life. :sarcasm:

I realy want to see something other than lip service from select Dems about the oil companies and the rampant corporate welfare we are suffering through.

All this tough talk is fine -- but we expect RESULTS from you Rahm. *WE* gave you back Congress -- now YOU owe us.

6. Well, they just gave the ok to drill in the Gulf.
So now they can talk big. But my Bill Nelson is just so happy.

And the vote was totally lopsided, so they did not even bother to dissent. Just went along.

7. Hopefully it will lead to alternative sources of oil. Why wouldn't the USA
want to be a leader in alternative technology? Just because a rich child of an Oilmen made it to president...the USA almost stood completely out of the race to create alternative fuels. Thank gosh for the democrats winning the Nov elections. Thank god. If * had been left with a majority in congress.. the WH would still be claiming 1) there is not one shred of evidence greenhouse gasses exist or are caused by burning fossil fuels and 2) that oil is plentiful.
