Evangelicals show unease with the GOP

Evangelicals show unease with the GOP
After decades of support, many Christian conservatives now are disappointed in the performance of the Republican Party.

Of the many disturbing trends for Republicans this campaign season, one of the most troubling is the drop in support among white evangelicals.

The number of Christian conservatives with a favorable view of the party has plummeted from 74 percent to 54 percent between 2004 and this year, according to the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. Evangelicals make up more than one-third of GOP voters.

Christian conservatives have been here before - disappointed that Republicans they helped elect failed to enact the evangelical agenda - yet they have consistently returned to the GOP. Even as they question the current Republican leadership, evangelicals are far more supportive than other Americans of President Bush and the party, the Pew Center found.

"There's a lot of discontentment," said Marvin Olasky, editor of the Christian newsweekly World and a framer of the "compassionate conservative" language used by Bush. "But unfortunately for most conservative evangelicals, there's no alternative."

1. Wake up and smell the coffee.
They really need to quit voting for some party that claims they are going to outlaw abortion and gay marriage. There are more issues to base your decision on. For instance, an illegal war that is killing and maiming our military men and women.

2. That's The Point -
These folks have no other agenda. They do not participate in the political process as the rest of us do, rather they are Pharisees who see politics as a way to impose their narrow view of religion (I won't call it Christianity because it has nothing to do with Christianity & directly violates Christ's teachings) on everyone else. They are the Pharisees, those who condemned Christ to death.

3. Thank you. It has been years since Roe vs Wade and their
chosen party has not delivered. The biggest reason they have not delivered is because the issue was too good to let go of. Evangelicals who really want to prevent abortions should go back to the old church methods. Use the Ten Commandment as a measuring stick of their own sins and not to judge others. Then they can work with their own members who may be facing a choice to about life issues.

That is what the church used to do. I was raised that "I" should not have an abortion not that I should prevent everyone else from having one. Even then I was told that forgiveness is available if I fell into sin. The church I came from also supported government social programs as deterrents to abortion. They were glad when AFDC helped a young mother keep her baby. I see these evangelicals as the biggest bunch of hypocrites that ever lived. (ME = good, YOU = sinner-NO NO NO NO.
