Wow! Puritanism is alive and well in the "underground" community!

I recently submitted a piece called: 10 reasons why Christian Fundamentalists are terrified of sex. It was a little funky and I submitted it in the spirit of comic relief.

But the response from a few readers was frightening. Puritanical to the max and utterly missing the larger point that SEX IS NOT UNRELATED TO POLITICS.

Not to see this is astounding! Did Freud not even happen?

Surely the Democratic Underground can handle some sex realism. Help me out with this folks -- you know this is true. VERY much of the Bush/Republican (and Christian fundamentalist) shtick is grounded in sexual neurosis.

What's happening out there isn't just jabbery politics. It's coming from a lot of profoundly sexually dysfunctional people. And people who make that clear over and over and over again in their words and actions.

Yeah, my piece used words (God forbid) like "climaxing" in the context of tweaking people who are so twisted about sex that they act it out in radically destructive ways. Like starting preemptive wars, raping Mother Nature, etc., etc., etc.

And why can't we joke about condoms why it has to do with fundamentalists who are now trying to make condoms illegal?

Surely we need to lighten up about this subject. But FAR MORE IMPORTANTLY isn't it imperative to realize that sex is part of human existence right down to our quarks? And that means right down to our politics, wacko religious cults, and the White House.

Frankly (since we're still in first person mode), I can't think of one thing which has been MORE factored out of the social/political dialog of the last six years than how much of this Bush/Republican/Fundamentalist insanity is coming from sexual nut cases!

Hey, sex is cool. It's a celebration of life. In a certain sense, it IS life, so let's not get all clammy and righteous about a little Eros talk.

And cracking a few jokes in the midst of all this grinding tragedy is cool too.

7. You seem to be conflicted about whether you are joking or serious.

I didn't see your original piece, but perhaps your joking wasn't funny enough and that's what led people to believe you were serious. And maybe your seriousness about your "larger point" of a sex-to-politics nexus sounded too jokey.

Maybe, instead of blaming the audience for missing your point, you should consider how your writing might be the culprit.
