CAMPAIGN AGAINST TORTURE
Momentum Builds for the American Psychological Association to Prohibit Psychologists from Participating in Interrogations
Momentum is building among the membership of the American Psychological Association (APA) to contest the current APA guidelines that allow member involvement in interrogations related to US counter-terrorism efforts. PHR has urged the APA leadership, meeting in New Orleans August 10-13, to adopt an explicit rule that prohibits psychologists from participating in interrogations, upholding core tenets of health care ethics and US law. A recent article published on Salon.com brought to light the first evidence of direct involvement by a psychologist in abusive interrogations conducted by US personnel in 2002. The American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association both adopted prohibitions against direct health personnel involvement in interrogations earlier this year.
