Where is Italia Federici? (Abramoff/Gail Norton/CREA/Payola)

Washington - I feel better. My sleuthing skills haven't totally deserted me. Even the U.S. marshals couldn't find Italia Federici.

Federici is a former political aide to Interior Secretary Gale Norton and a confidante of other department officials, most notably former Deputy Interior Secretary Steven Griles. She heads a group called the Council of Republicans for Environmental Advocacy.

A few months back, I tried to find CREA's Washington offices, to ask Federici why her group got $250,000 from Indian gambling tribes that were clients of indicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

I failed. CREA, it turned out, didn't have an office. The address on its website was a mail drop. Apparently, it is run out of Italia's home and pocket.

...lots more...

More about CREA (Council of Republicans for Environmental Advocacy):

WASHINGTON (AP) The Interior Department's former No. 2 official denied on Wednesday that he gave preferential treatment to a lobbyist under investigation for his work on behalf of Indian tribes and their casino interests.

Steven Griles' assertion was challenged by a one-time colleague and by senators who cited e-mails by the lobbyist, Jack Abramoff.

To the Senate committee investigating Abramoff and his partner, Michael Scanlon, Griles said it was "outrageous" and "untrue" that they had special access to him, as they claim.

McCain also questioned Griles about his relationship with Italia Federici, president of the Council of Republicans for Environmental Advocacy. The senator said Abramoff directed at least four of his tribal clients to give $250,000 to the group.

The council was founded by Norton and conservative activist Grover Norquist to promote Republicans' environmental agenda. Federici took over as president when Norton was named Interior secretary.

"Documents obtained in the course of the investigation suggest that Mr. Abramoff might have had his tribal clients pay so much because he perceived that CREA's president, Italia Federici, would help him get inside information about, and possibly influence, tribal issues pending at the Department of Interior," McCain said.

The Interior Department's importance wasn't lost on Abramoff. He had his tribal clients donate at least $225,000 to the Council of Republicans for Environmental Advocacy, an Orwellian-named pro-business group founded by George W. Bush's Interior secretary, Gail Norton, and run by one of her former campaign aides. The purpose of these contributions seems clear from Coushatta documents, which explain the significance of every Coushatta donation ("Senate Appropriations," for instance); following the Council's name was simply the tag line "(Norton)." As reported by The Washington Post's Susan Schmidt, when the Coushattas were hoping the Interior Department would reject the 2002 casino bid of a rival Louisiana tribe, the Jena band of Choctaws, Abramoff arranged a face-to-face meeting between Norton and the Coushatta chairman, Lovelin Poncho, at a Georgetown dinner. Abramoff also enlisted dozens of House and Senate conservatives to send Norton letters opposing the Jena casino, and--with the help of Ralph Reed--got a top aide to Christian evangelical leader James Dobson to do the same. (It's no wonder Abramoff knew his way around Interior: He helped organize the Department during the 2001 Bush transition.)

1. "Office a mail drop." Figures....I hope the "marshall's find Frederica
ASAP and that she hasn't fled to "Italia." :D

Thanks UIA for putting together those links. It's appearing that Norquist was running quite a few "mail drop" outfits collecting funds for dubiously named foundations, interest groups and PAC's.

I remember all the research DU'ers did last year on Amy Ridenour (National Center for Public Policy) and and her husbands numerous "mail drops" and was delighted to see that she was hauled before the Indian Gaming Investigators last month to testify. If McCain really wants to he could shut down most funding for Repugs from these sham groups...but somehow I think he will stick to the Gameing.. :eyes:

2. I want to see Grover Norquist handcuffed
and fingerprinted and sent to jail where he will eat bad food and shower because his sentence will include never getting near a bathtub again and he will wear orange jumpsuits and sleep on 50 thread count polyester sheets until he is hanged for treason.
