Jimmy Carter on NPR
Edited on Fri Nov-04-05 08:36 AM by waiting for hope
Did anyone just hear Jimmy Carter's interview on NPR? http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4984885
I think he touched on some pertinent issues concerning religion and politics...

1. I did, he sounded brilliant. Boy, he had the bushistas right in target
And he did it gently, accurately, and without rancor. Devastating.

Great job, Jimmy.

2. I only hope that
I can be as articulate at 81 - it's a shame he has never received the recognition from the American public that he deserves.

3. I think he gets a lot of respect as a private citizen, to tell the truth
My aunt and uncle, who are two of the biggest kool-aide drinkers in America, both think that Jimmy Carter is one fine individual. And I am sure there are lots of others out there that think so. I think we need more people with hearts like Jimmy Carter has.

4. He is a great man.....
And it really makes my blood boil when people like Limberger continually denigrate him.

5. modest, honest, and ethical. and very, very, very smart.
His gentle words have done more harm to the Bushistas than anyone could know. I heard a couple of red old ladies who had heard him in the grocery line today. They agreed that they were misled and voted wrong last year. Listening to them made my heart grow fonder.

I am serious. I don't think the WH knows what hit them or how to respond. I suspect they will ignore him and hope he goes away.

Well, Jimmy is on a book tour and he is going. From state to state, repeating what he said this week.

Go, Jimmy!

6. His reasons for leaving the Southern Baptists a few years back ..
.. should have caused any Christians remaining in the SBC to question what was happening with the Convention:

Jimmy Carter leaving the Southern Baptist Convention
Jimmy Carter Renounces Southern Baptist Convention
ATLANTA, Oct. 20 (UPI)-- <snip> He said the "most disturbing" reason he and his wife decided to disassociate themselves from the Southern Baptist Convention was the elimination of language in June that identifies Jesus Christ as "the criterion by which the Bible is to be interpreted." <snip>

He repeated this on the radio yesterday morning ...

8. Yes I heard him. I liked what he said - but he is way to polite. He
implied and came very close to saying that the theocons use the religious fundies for political gain, and the religious fundies are using the theocons to expand their vision of a theocratic state.

Why not come out and say it.

9. He spoke strongly for separation of church and state, quoting
both the Bible and Thomas Jefferson as his sources. He is a very religious and generous man, who is the epitome of what a Christian (or any other religious person) should be.
