Why is New Orleans in so much worse shape today than New York City was after the attacks on Sept. 11?

The short answer is that New York was attacked by fire, not water. But then why are urbanites so much better prepared to cope with fire than with flooding? Mostly because they learned to fight fire without any help from the Army Corps of Engineers or the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Here's my response letter to the little cockroach:

Regarding your contemptuous and ill-willed editorial (Ben Franklin Had the Right Idea for New Orleans), the wealthy will always build where they can get the best vistas and will always be able to evacuate before disaster hits. It’s the poor, the disenfranchised, the young and the old who suffer in the wrath of a forewarned disaster such as Katrina. To protect them requires a strong, well-funded federal government with competent leadership (the latter the very antonym of George W. Bush).

Go crawl back to that right-wing think rock you came out from under, cockroach.

Got news for ya John - there is no way the risk pools are big enough to provide enough premium to put on reserve, for something that is certain to happen, as the climate changes and storms increase in size and destructive ability.

People need to be told the truth. The BushCo Anarchy-Capitalists scoffing and ridiculing real scientists and referring to the results of their studies as "junk science" has had wide acceptance across the population. It was just one more big LIE.

People need to be told the truth so they can make informed decisions about where they are going to live out their lives. They need to know what the real risks are. It is cruel to lie to them about this. But, what's new? Cruelty is the BushCo specialty.

John Tierney may not know that the insurers have been withdrawing new, and in many cases non-renewing existing property coverage along the entire length of the eastern coastal areas from Brownsville, TX all the way to Maine for years.

When I talk to my customers in these areas and explain why it is so challenging to find quality, affordable property insurance - that the insurers did their own scientific studies and determined that global warming IS occurring - many are aghast. Literally, they gasp. They were so taken in by BushCo and Limbaugh etal scoffing at the concept and calling it "junk science" that they are usually left speechless for a few moments.

When they hear the insurance companies are calling it real not "junk science" and acting on that reality - it gives them a jolt. They are so used to insurers backing all things the right winger bs - it starts to wake them up.
