Fighting Breaks Out in Falluja After U.S. (Air) Strikes
FALLUJA, Iraq (Reuters) - Fresh fighting broke out in the Iraqi city of Falluja Monday after U.S. forces attacked suspected rebel targets with air strikes, artillery and mortar rounds, a Reuters correspondent in Falluja said.

At least five artillery rounds and air strikes hit the city and soon afterwards exchanges of gunfire and blasts could be heard.

U.S. forces also launched sporadic mortar rounds against targets overnight.

Marines face the task of trying to eliminate what they call pockets of resistance around Falluja in an offensive that the interim government hopes will help stabilize Iraq (news - web sites) ahead of elections scheduled for January.

Tank commanders said late Sunday that the Shuhada district in the south of the city, the last rebel stronghold, still had a significant number of guerrillas.

1. I am confused -- I thought the city with 100% contained
nothing left to do --

Damn if you can't believe the military P.R. than what can who can we believe?

The troops are needed in other get out the vote efforts elsewhere in Iraq.

2. here's the military statement...not that it clears anything up
In a statement, the military said it was clearing remaining spots of resistance, and removing stores of weapons from buildings including mosques.

"One mission early on Nov. 15 attacked a bunker complex in the southernmost unpopulated section of Falluja after Multi- National forces discovered an underground bunker and steel- reinforced tunnels," the statement said.

"The tunnels connected a ring of facilities filled with weapons, an anti-aircraft artillery gun, bunk beds, a truck and a suspected weapons cache."

U.S. officers say they have retaken full control of Falluja after a week of intense combat with guerrillas.

3. This is why they don't want to let people back in.
The fighting is not over, and it's not in control. Think
Stalingrad. That may be a bit over the top, but it's the right
idea.
