Rumsfeld gets hostile reception in Saddam's hometown
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20030905/pl_afp/iraq_us_rumsfeld_tikrit&cid=1521&ncid=1473

TIKRIT, Iraq (AFP) - Tanks cordoned off the main street to Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit as the man who masterminded the local hero's fall from power, US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, came for a visit.

"Donald Rumsfeld is nothing, but Bush I would cut to pieces," said a man in a grey robe, who identified himself only as former major in the Iraqi army, just 40 metres (yards) from US soldiers on a street corner.

"Why are your troops still here? You wanted Saddam. He's gone. Now go home," said the man, probably one of the many army officers under the dictator whose homes are now raided nightly by US forces in Tikrit, where troops are bogged down in a low-level guerrilla war.

Clearly there was no love lost between the Tikritis and the Americans as the city's main street was sectioned off with barbed wire and soldiers whispered to each other to watch their backs out of fear someone might come and blow their brains out.

18. Very a propos analogy...
And I think it will earn similar love from the populace of the occupied country. Tyrants love to gloat, but it will come back to haunt him.

2. "Why don't they help the poor families"
They don't help the poor families in the US. They damn sure couldn't care less about the Iraqi poor.

3. The truth is coming out
The Neo-cons can manipulate part of the population part of the time but I believe the truth will slip through the cracks. Watching the masterful PR job Rove, Cheney and the 100s of other Bush employees are doing via the US media I am reminded of American resourcefulness. They are trying to sell the neo-cons imperial move to dominate the Middle East but it is a big chore, just ask Britian about thier Iraq occupation almost 100 years ago.

21. Rudyard Kipling wrote the following about Afghanistan...
Afghanistan's Plains
by Rudyard Kipling

The following verse penned around a century ago after
the English suffered a learning experience in the
tortuous valleys of the Kindu Kush.

When you're wounded and left
On Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out,
To cut up your remains,
Just roll on your rifle,
And blow out your brains,
And go to your Gawd
Like a soldier…….

4. Like she said.

"Most of the people's conditions are getting worse. They are not getting salaries. Prices keep going up. Before life was better for the middle class," she said.

Welcome to OUR world lady.

nothing more. I think our own troops hate him as much as the Iraqi's do.

Rumsfeld will gather a group of american troops, tell them they're going home, wait for them to cheer and smile, then snap the picture and he's outie. 'Course, the troops will be there indefinitely, but won't know it until Rumsfeld is long gone..

8. PR
Rummy is trying to show America that the US military is 'making progress, we are on the hunt' as Jr says, and that the US is now ready to step back from the front lines and, more importantly, get out of the media headlines. I think the US is turning control of the towns over to the Shiite militia but only time will tell.

Some people say a public figure making a risky TV appearance signals a possible transition. I think Rummy, Bush and the neo-cons are prep-ing us for a change in how they want the public to view the Iraq occupation. They want Iraq out of the headlines but will infact be mainly concerned with the guarding of the oil wells and a few key sections of Baghdad, much like Afghanistanright now, while leaving the governing of people up to the Shiites.

The might want us to view the UN in a more positive light so the UN can move into Iraq, for a price, and deal with the political situation(the Shiites) while the US retains possesion of the oil wells and a large security force that answers only to the Pentagon.

7.  THE U.S. MILTARY SHOULD HAVE PAID CHALABI'S GROUP TO THROW FLOWERS
Then Rumbdumb could have ridden in a Chariot, his vanquished prisoners bound in chains, trailing to his rear. His children would have joined him on the chariot. Carts overflowing with looted museum artifacts, gold and silver would have followed in the procession pulled by slaves.
The heads of Sadam's sons would have preceded him, mounted on pikes or long bayonets. The cheering crowds would have drown out the playing of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" by the Combined Services marching bands.

It would have been a triumph fit for Caesar himself.

19. they did some of that
right at the beginning of the war, there was some footage of some real phony-looking Iraqi jubilance. Unfortunately for Karen Hughes and her propaganda team, the Iraqis they used didn't turn out to be good actors because they were not very convincing at all.

Interesting he would make that distinction in a way that not many Americans would. Sounds like a genuine warrior.

20. The Busheviks want that oil and other loot
So they won't be leaving until Iraq is bled white, Soviet style...Nazi style

"kinder and gentler" of course, more along the Iranian SAVAK model.

As Imperial Amerika shows, you can always find people to sell out their nation for a song and a little power...perhaps some Bushevik stolen loot.

23. Rumsfeld is our soldiers' greatest enemy too.
These troops are seen as expendable to the neocon cabal. "They get what they deserve for volunteering." The rush to war proves that this administration cares little for the lives of our troops. War should be a last resort. These coward chickenhawks know NOTHING about the terrible consequences of war, and did not hesitate to send other people's children to die in aa far off land. I'm betting any troops that got to see Rummy were DISARMED before the photo op. We need leadership that cares about people, not just soldiers, but working people and poor people. The so-called leadership we have now cares only about MONEY and POWER.
