Rove: U.S. has moved in GOP direction
Rove: U.S. has moved in GOP direction

By DEB RIECHMANN
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — Reflecting on how he delivered President Bush his second term, White House political adviser Karl Rove admitted Sunday that John Kerry's vote for, then against, funding in Iraq and Afghanistan was the "gift that kept on giving."

The deft strategy of Rove, whom Bush calls the architect of his re-election campaign, is credited with helping move the nation from the 49 percent to 49 percent stalemate of the 2000 election to a 51 percent to 48 percent split in the Republicans' favor.

"The country is still close, but it has moved in a Republican direction, and this election confirmed that," Rove said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Tactically, Kerry's decision to vote for the $87 billion in funding for troops and reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan, and then deciding in October 2003 to vote against it, was a bonanza for the president's campaign, "the gift that kept on giving," Rove said.

Bush's campaign featured the videotape in thousands of commercials around the country to paint Kerry as a flip-flopper. The label stuck to the Massachusetts senator despite reports about frequent changes in various Bush positions.

1. No, the south has
Kerry won more electoral votes and popular votes outside that south than Bush did.

2. I would argue that the South moved away from * too
the only thing that has moved in the GOP's direction is BBV.

15. Actually, I think it was the Hicks…

Hicks Nixed Slicks' Pick

In every state in the Union, red states included, Sen. John F. Kerry performed disproportionately well in urban areas. Kerry actually carried, sometimes convincingly, cities in some of the deepest-red red states that are about as far from coastal secularism as you can imagine.

Missouri, for example, broke 54% to 46% for Bush — except the city of St. Louis, which voted overwhelmingly for Kerry.

cosmo vs hillbilly….polished vs rustic…..sophisticate vs bumpkin…..regardless, with an estimated 200 million eligible voters, bush garnered slightly less than 30%.....hardly a barometer….

6. MORE PEOPLE voted AGAINST W than any incumbent in history
We did good folks, we turned out the vote we built the framework and we are coming back.

Incumbents are hard to remove from office during war time and we need to recognize that fact.

They are trying now to spin a mass exodus of mindset that just isnt there..

Dont let them

11. There's a big difference between it being hard to remove an incumbent..
and fixing the vote! Fraud is fraud, no spin about it. And this being war time makes it just that much worse! How dare those MF'S do this in an election after we were attacked!

7. L.O.L....Hijacked not Moved!
The mainstream news media have been spoon fed a new word by Bush/Rove. That word is "evangelical," and they are babbling it to the exclusion of some very real issues impacting Democracy and the Bush Presidency.

The second Bush/Rove pabulum is the mythical Bush "mandate," also being belched along with the evangelical pill. Meanwhile, no one seems to entertain the possibility that the Bush "mandate" may mostly be an Electoral WMD.

The first message from Election 2004 is that BBV or any voting method not leaving a permanent paper trail that can be audited is undemocratic and un-American. They must be banished from the American landscape forever.

The second message is the history of American voting is both a history of recounts and a history of rigged elections. If there were widespread fraud it occurred in the Bush Family Fiefdom of Florida, which despite the "hurricane votes" Kerry should have won or at least come within a razor thin margin. That Jeb Bush has been "busy" assuring no chad recounts is not the product of conspiracy theorizing, it is just plain common sense.

The third message is that exit polls are always within 2% of voting tallies and no amount of media spin makes election 2004 an exception. Kerry had a 97.7% probability of winning Ohio and a 93.5% probability of winning Florida. Also when was the last time an incumbent President with an approval rating of less than 50% won reelection?

Those who persist in denying the validity of the exit polls need to explain the following: (1) Exit polling statistically correlated with voting tallies in every state except those using BBV or electronic machine combinations. (2) In every case of discrepancy, G.W. Bush was the recipient of extra votes (5%-7%) and NEVER John Kerry. Why?

The fourth message is that no amount of White House or media spin can stop the miasma of stench that is beginning to pervade results in Ohio and Florida. This will linger and foul the second term. Overturning the election is not the issue. Truth is the issue which is something that most journalists and media seem to have abandoned years ago.

And lastly, we have a president already regarded as illegitimate by 1/2 the people who is reelected in an election increasingly tainted with allegations of fraud. To those people he will forever remain illegitimate. Bush may rule 1/2 the country but he can never govern.

8. THERE WERE TWO...TWO...TWO DIFFERENT BILLS you stupid fcking nation!
TWO DIFFERENT BILLS! Kerry voted FOR THE FIRST BILL...and AGAINST THE SECOND PORK-LADEN BILL.

"reports about FREQUENT CHANGES in BUSH POSITIONS"???

The man is the WORLD GRAND CHAMPION of FLIP-FLOPPING...but the US State Media DIDN'T REPORT ON IT.

It's amazing that 49% of this country were able to see through the opaque fog of TOTAL RIGHTWINGNUT BULLSHIT.

23. Thanks, Lynn.
You nailed it. The Republicans control the media, and as long as they do, we're hosed. We need about 50 more radio stations and 2 or 3 television networks, minimum, just to get the truth out to middle America. Most of what middle America knows about the world comes from the TV, and we're 20 years behind the ball on control of the media.

Now what do we do?

26. Here's a nice article from Bloomberg.com...
Quite frightening if you ask me. I've heard/read several people in this forum claim that Rove has a plan to render the Democratic party obsolete, and I never believed them. I stand corrected. Rove is truly someone we need to spend the next 4 years picking apart and dissecting.

28. I admit that Kerry's back and forth vote
looked bad to the average voter leaning repuke who can't understand complexity but the country is NOT moving GOP. If they want to believe the country is moving toward them then that will be their mistake and misfortune in the next election (if it is an honest election which remains to be seen).
