Soldiers from the Black Watch are preparing to target criminal and terrorist gangs as they settle into the regiment's latest base in a US-controlled area of Iraq.

The 850-strong regiment is preparing at Camp Dogwood for Operation Bracken which will target the gangs operating freely in the area. In the past they have provided "rat-run" escapes for militants from the city of Fallujah.

However, the journey from the southern city of Basra was marred yesterday with the death of a Black Watch soldier who died after his vehicle overturned.
