Canadian (BC) aid worker remembered as hero to Iraq's children
COURTENAY (CBC)

The UN Children's Fund representative in Iraq says the memory of a Canadian killed by a huge bomb blast in downtown Iraq will serve as an inspiration to those who continue his work.

Christopher Klein-Beekman's funeral was held on Sunday in Courtney, on Vancouver Island.

He was killed on Aug. 19, along with Canadian aid worker Gillian Clark, 47, and 21 others when a truck packed with explosives blew up outside the UN's headquarters in Baghdad. Three other Canadians were wounded.

At 31, Klein-Beekman was considered young to be UNICEF's number 2 official in Iraq, but his boss says he excelled in everything he did – and he did a lot. That includes overseeing food and medicine distribution to orphanages, keeping electricity running to communities across the country, and organizing immunization programs. ---

1. A fitting tribute
to a fine Canadian...Rest In Peace.

"Klein-Beekman's coffin, draped in the UN flag, was carried by Mounties in red serge."
