Florida is focus of furor again
By Kathy Kiely, USA TODAY
JACKSONVILLE — Ministers are sending their flocks straight from church to the polls Sunday and the presidential campaigns are sending in their biggest guns as early voting continues through the weekend. Florida, which decided the 2000 election after a six-week recount, is again a center of political controversy.
At the end of the first week of early voting:

• Two federal lawsuits are pending. One, brought by Rep. Robert Wexler, a Democrat from Boca Raton, demands paper documentation of votes cast on computerized machines. Another suit here in Duval County seeks more early voting sites and longer hours
more...

You would think America would want to make it easier for people to vote!!! Not in Florida especially if its a Democratic area!!!

2. Jeb Bush might think he's clever now...
but two fuckups in a row basically wipes out any dreams he will ever have of becoming president.

9. jeb bush was never gonna be president anyway
for one reason, no one with the last name bush will probably hold elective office in american for another 50 years. (sorry, george p. but not to worry, odds are you'll be in prison anyway, being exchanged for cigarettes.)

secondly, w. would distance himself from and block jeb from getting close enough to become a serious candidate for office. w's ego and mania are such that he's not going to allow even the remotest chance that his little brother could show him up in the white house.

You're talking about yesterday's America, before the neofascist rampage.

8. Ever hear of literacy tests? Why was it necessary to have the 19th
amendment? The truth is, the rich and powerful have NEVER liked democracy! It always has been and always will be a constant stuggle.

7. Why should they fix the problems?
When they have so damned much to gain by not fixing the problems? It's like asking the fox to fix that broken lock on the hen house door.

We can look forward to them not fixing these problems many more times in the future... unless we decide to do something about it NOW. The solution is not going to originate from the Bush cabal, that's for sure.

The Bush family can't make money from honest elections or from peace on earth. Never forget that.

11. Agreed.
They controlled the Office of the President and both houses of Congress and yet refused to address these problems for over 3 years. Only one explanation. They didn't think it was in their best interests to fix the problems.

One of the first things President Kerry needs to do is propose nationalized election standards, including standardized procedures and standardized machines with a definite paper trail. Add to that serious federal oversight and substantial penalties for violators, and we might start to see some real democracy in America.

10. Actually there is going to be a third law suit
After the court stepped on Hood's (our beloved SoS)neck concerning her unilateral decision that electronic voting machines are exempt from recounts. Her solution was that if a recount is needed in a precinct using electronic voting, she would initiate an investigation. The ACLU said nope, lets go back to court.

12. If Florida screws up again, it is totally Jeb's fault
Katherine Harris was the last elected Secretary of State. Since she left office that position is now appointed by the Governor. Glenda Hood who in charge of this election is Jeb's personal choice. If there are any problems they are both directly to blame.

13. Unfortunately, I don't think it's an IF...
I was going to vote early the other day and while looking for a parking space, I looked up and there was a LINE outside!! Well, that is a good sign, so I left to vote another day! :+

I am seeing lots more Bush/Cheney stickers and signs now though and more red/white/blue ribbons on cars and I think I'm seeing more flags again. I'm in Hernando County about 40 minutes northwest of Tampa.

15. WHERE ELSE ARE THINGS HAPPENING?
While the problems in Florida are very real (my family lives in Florida and are Dems), be wary: a lot of focus on Florida may distract us from other areas of Republican chicanery.

Pay attention to Florida, but also look to find where else they are cheating and stealing.
