For sign pilferer, politicians aren't only ones falling flat on their face
By Lynn Bartels, Rocky Mountain News
October 19, 2004

A Lakewood Republican stealing campaign signs late one night got nabbed when he ran across a low- hanging driveway chain, fell face first onto a pilfered sign and the concrete and knocked himself unconscious.

Randal Wagner, 50, was loaded into an ambulance, treated at Lutheran Medical Center for abrasions and facial cuts and issued a summons.

Wagner, who unsuccessfully tried to steal a "Dave Thomas" congressional sign that evening, had signs for other Democratic candidates in his Toyota pickup, Wheat Ridge police reported.

"I did a very stupid thing," Wagner said Monday, admitting theft of the signs. "I got caught up in the political passions of this highly contested election."

5. I've had two Kerry signs stolen from my house in RI
Edited on Tue Oct-19-04 12:24 PM by shpongled
Strangely enough, the second one was returned two days later.

I believe he must have been caught as well. This sign was fairly heavy duty and heavy (made of wood and steel) and easily identifiable.

Maybe a teenager was caught by their parents?

7. even money he's back at it.
there oughta be a special category for stifling free speech. he should be forced to cast his votes for the dems and donate $ and pick up signs after the election is over, because no one wants that job.

I left a message that I was a registered Republican and I really respect what he did..I said they don't need anyone else to vote for..Bush should get 99.5 % of the vote and the only reason he doesn't get 100% is because .5% are too sick.. I made him aware of how commendable it was for a 50 year old man to be out there stealing signs..I hope he gets the irony, after all Saddam always received 99% of the vote..

16. I usded to use one, maybe its the same
I strung a chain across my driveway because it protected my gate form being hit by U-turns in my driveway. They are used in rural locations to keep vehicles off your property

19. I wonder if the Republican Party is paying people to steal signs?
There's so much of this going on all over the country.

It reminds me of the number of disruptors we get here on DU. I've seen similar disruptors operate on boards following courtroom trials. I know that there are shady "pr" firms that pay people to disrupt bulletin boards, attempting to influence public opinion.

It's all part of the current Republican Party pattern of suppressing facts and broadcasting lies about their opposition. Their whole approach is so anti-American.

22. Get a brain, freeper moran!
50 years old and he's a f**king petty thief. Grow up freeper! Too funny about the bozo smashing in his own face. And frankly Mrs freeper should be issued a summons as well, she is equally as guilty driving the getaway car.

23. What an assmunch.
Seriously. While I'm all for taking down BushCo signs -- after all, isn't this the land of free speech? -- Republicans know they can't win ANYTHING on merit anymore, so they resort to this kind of thing. They are obsessed with the fact that the world in reality does not conform to their warped views of it, so rather than adapting and changing their belief system, they just try to eradicate any evidence to the contrary. It even goes on up to Furious George.

First he gets a write up in the Rocky Mountain News. Then it hits the InternetS. Then Olbermann mentions him, by name.

His 'stupidity' has made him a national laughingstock.

Poor guy.
