They plan to make sure Allawi steals this election, and the presence of Muslim peacekeepers would have jeopardized that plan. Also, they didn't want Muslim peacekeepers to see the general carnage up close.

This looks like a possible political trap. Hope Kerry doesn't bite.

I.e., anyone supporting sending Saudi peacekeepers would be characterized as naive; "great way to make it easy for terrorists to take over Iraq".

Personally I think there should be Muslim peacekeepers there, but I think it would be politically risky for the Dems to say so at this time.
