Pill propelled into abortion debate
By Jill McGivering
BBC correspondent in Washington

The birth control pill revolutionised women's health - and grew to become one of the most popular forms of family planning. But it is now under attack from pro-life groups in the US.

A growing number of doctors and pharmacists are now refusing to dispense it, on the grounds that it is actually a form of abortion.

Pro-choice groups fear this new moral objection to the Pill could lead to more unplanned pregnancies, even more abortions.

"They've done so much with outlawing and restricting access to abortion that they've set their sights on birth control because there's nothing else really they can do to further restrict abortion here in Wisconsin," Ms Boyce says.

2. How very republican. It should be used against the GOP.
I have always thought that this should be a huge political issue. Ads describing all the stories of doctors refusing to prescribe the pill and pharmacists refusing to dispense the pill and the various state laws protecting such pharmacists from any discipline by their employers might be the issue that would motivate some of the millions of nonvoting single women to register and vote. Plus, even though it may be too late for this election, I think the democrats should define the republican party as opposed to the pill and force moderate republicans to either take control of the party back from the Reich wing fundamentalists or leave the party.

3. Let's get them to put it all on the table

Stem cell research, RU488, the single hormone pill, and IVF.

Let's push them into coming out against ALL of these medical
procedures/treatments as just forms of abortion (which, of course,
they ARE). That will reduce support for the entire Right to Life
movement. And maybe, just maybe, we can get our country back from
these Christian Taliban dillholes.

4. Absolutely. The democratic party really needs to develop a well
organized and co-ordinated strategy to stress that the republican party is controlled by extremists on all of these issues. But I don't think it will reduce the amount of support for anti-abortion groups, just the amount of political and legislative power those groups have.
