DeKalb Prepares for High Profile Speaker - Cheney
Edited on Sat Sep-18-04 11:27 AM by seemslikeadream
by Katie Hammer

DeKalb, Illinois- Inside the NIU convocation center, dozens of volunteers worked throughout the day to prepare for the arrival of U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney who'll be speaking at a political event Saturday.

"You've got to set up all these tables the flowers and decorations people have made signs to be displayed all over," says Event Co-Chair Connie Peshia.

Cheney is the most high profile guest speaker in 17 years to make an appearance at U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert's annual fundraiser.

"We're thrilled that he could come, absolutely thrilled. It's going to be a great event," says Peshia.

Organizer's hope Cheney's visit will sway voters in the November election.

Peshia says that "to have the vice president come show some confidence in the Republicans maybe we can pull this state out."

Twenty-three-hundred guests are expected to fill these seats.

There is no doubt security will be tight. Local law enforcement, state officials and the Secret Service will all be guarding the event. No information on security details were released as of Friday, but this will be Hastert's biggest fundraising audience.

"This is the biggest and best ever an we are sold out," says Peshia.

The vice president is expected to speak Saturday around 7:20 p.m. at the convocation center located on Lincoln Highway in DeKalb.

Cheney to visit NIU
VP scheduled to speak at fundraiser for Dennis Hastert

Vice President Dick Cheney is coming to the Convocation Center Sept.18.

Cheney will be a guest speaker at House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s 18th annual fundraiser, said Kevin Selover, marketing manager for the arena. Hastert represents Illinois’ 14th District, which includes DeKalb and Sycamore. He is renting the facility to host the banquet-style event.

The event is not NIU sponsored, Selover said.

“This is the second year in a row that Hastert has held the event at the Convo,” said Melanie Magara, assistant vice president of Public Affairs.

The Convo was chosen because it is the only place in the surrounding area that is large enough to accommodate the event, said Brad Hahn, a spokesman for Hastert.

Cheney is scheduled to arrive in DeKalb about 4:30 p.m., Selover said. The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and is open to all for $150 per plate. The deadline to purchase tickets is Sept.13.

Here's the info

Anyone who wants to show Dick Cheney that Illinois is Kerry-Edwards territory should come to the NIU campus this Saturday Sept. 18 for a Kerry rally. Cheney is in town for a big money fundraiser and Kerry-Edwards supporters are gathering nearby to say that we reject the Bush/Cheney agenda.

To show your support come to the Central Park Commons area at the NIU campus in between the Douglas and Stevenson dorms on Stevenson Drive. Meet at 5pm. A large rally with speakers will take place for supporters from the entire area.

Please spread the word.

Between building 7 & 8 on the map

9. Go get those sleazy sons of bitches.!
How stupid do you have to be to be a Republican worshiper. Everything they are doing is counter-productive to the health and well-being of our nation and the world. Traitors.

3. Preparations being made for Cheney visit

Preparations being made for Cheney visit
By Chris Rickert - City Editor

About 2,300 people are expected to attend the $150-a-plate annual fund-raiser for Hastert. Tickets have been sold out since Tuesday, according to Brad Hahn, a spokesman for Hastert's campaign.

State Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley, said those going to the event were asked to provide their birth dates and social security numbers so that federal agents could run background checks. He said that's a common safeguard when people visit federal buildings in Washington, D.C., for example....

The dinner also will consist of finger foods only, Hahn said, because of security concerns surrounding the potential dangerous uses of silverware.

Organizations including the Labor Rights Alliance, another campus group, as well as the DeKalb Interfaith Network and the Northern Illinois Peace Groups are expected to take part, said Lisa Mayse-Lillig, an NIU student and head of the Northern Coalition.
She said protesters will rally for about 20 minutes and then are likely to march to the corner of Lincoln Highway and Annie Glidden Road. "We were basically told by police that they wouldn't let us move any closer to the Convocation Center," she said.

"We're not going to have any protesters on our property," Selover confirmed. He said there will be a site about 150-200 feet away from the center where protesters can gather.

Mayse-Lillig said she was expecting from 100-150 protesters and hoped to send the message that it's not just people in large cities who feel as if their concerns aren't being represented by Hastert and Cheney.

5. Eugene, Ore.
Not everyone at Friday's rally was happy to see the Vice President.

Minutes after Cheney began to speak, a man in the crowd started
yelling at him. That's when another man standing nearby grabbed
the heckler, covered his mouth and wrestled him to the floor.

What they don't say is that while five or six old thugs
held the man on the floor of the hanger ... chaney over
the microphone was saying... go easy on him now boys he
might see the light as he smiled. :grr:

7. Be sure to have the ability to make NOISE from a distance.
Ever since I blasted Cheney through a mere blowhorn last year, the "freedom to speak" has been moved farther and farther away from the Busholinis' appearances.

If you are able to resource those who can produce "volume",...grab 'em!!!

We deserve to be heard,...one way or another!!!

The constitution guarantees our right to speak. While that right is being squelched,...we still have the power (and resources) to make our voices HEARD!!!!
