Suit Filed in Alabama Commandments Fight Back
Suit Filed in Alabama Commandments Fight Back

Supporters of the Ten Commandments monument asked a federal court Monday to block its removal from the Alabama Judicial Building, where barricades were erected to keep crowds from pressing against the glass front entrance.

Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore installed the monument two years ago and was suspended by a state judicial ethics panel last week for disobeying a federal court order to remove the 5,300-pound granite marker.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Mobile on behalf of a Christian radio talk show host and a pastor, says the forced removal of the monument would violate the constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion.

U.S. District Judge William Steele _ the judge who ordered the monument removed _ set a hearing for Wednesday on the lawsuit. (snip)

(snip) The monument is expected to be removed this week, though at least one company refused the job. Clark Memorial, a Birmingham company that built and moved the monument into the building, declined for business and personal reasons, vice president Charles Tourney said. (snip/...)

6. This suit is great
I figure if they win it, then I can sue to have my 2 1/2 ton granite edifice with the Wiccan Rede* installed right next to it. All in the name of religious liberty of course. With the number of religions in the US, it should be easy to block that building up completely.

7. Don't forget...
to clear space for my 6,000 lb. marble tribute to Anton LaVey.

Huh? Whatta you mean the Church of Satan isn't a legitimate religion?

8. Since the monument was illegally placed, someone should sue
Clark Memorial for placing the monument in the rotunda and force them to take it out.

10. The is not a problem
I know the lawyer who filed suit. His clients had to look hard and far for someone to take the case. (The lawyer is from rural California, where I live). Out of courtesy, let's just say that he came late in life to law and he's not the brightest of lights, with neither a record, history, nor resume to inspire confidence.

13. Didn't it already go to the Supreme Court?
I know that the other case was slightly different, but wasn't it effectively the same thing?
