It was the first time that the rebels, who oppose US support for the government, are suspected of directly attacking an American government target. The attack occurred just minutes after the center was closed for the weekend, and no one was injured, police said. Both Americans and Nepalese work at the center.
The attackers threw two bombs from the parking lot and then fled, police said.
The explosions damaged parts of the building, which houses an auditorium and an education counselling section, as well as the embassy's offices of public information, culture and education. The center and embassy are about 5 km apart.
