Rumsfeld defends 1000 Iraq deaths
Rumsfeld defends 1000 Iraq deaths
Rodney Dalton, New York correspondent
September 09, 2004
SEEKING to limit the political fallout from the 1000th US military death in Iraq yesterday, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said more Americans had died already in the "global war of terror".

Casualties were the price of "taking the offence" to terrorists, Mr Rumsfeld said in unprompted comments at a Pentagon briefing.

He said the "civilised world passed the thousandth casualty mark a long time ago".

"Hundreds were killed in Russia last week ... and this week we remember the 3000 citizens of dozens of countries who were killed on September 11, 2001,"

13. My mom called him
a senile man talking nonsense.

I found that to be an apt description of him. Creepy is another description that would fit.

2. I heard a man on NPR today, the father of one of the first
casualties in Iraq. He said that 1000 doesn't seem like a big number unless it's someone you know. That pretty much says it all. Obviously Rumsfeld is not personally affected by any of the casualties, it's just a numbers game.

Hmph. . .
Seems that way to the soldiers too. They just keep killing and torturing, just like they were ordered.

10. What I don't understand
is the crap about taking the fight to the enemy, so we won't have to fight them here. Even on the news tonight, there was a military wife repeating the mantra, "We're fighting them there, so we won't have to fight them here." Am I missing something? I had no idea the Iraqis were coming here to fight us.

4. So Mr. Rumsfeld
Tomorrow you join the battle, take up the gun, the knife, the suicider's vest, correct? That death is so easy for you.

That death of others.

The corruption of these people is sickening.

12. ...passed the thousandth casualty....
He got that right, at least 11 times in Iraq the last 18 months and still not a single word of mention to those people, who are being ignored by the military after they've been blown up already.

Sickening.
