Warrants for Colombian Soldiers in Union Killings

BOGOTA, Colombia (Reuters) - Colombian state prosecutors on Monday ordered the arrest of three soldiers in connection with the killing of union officials accused of being leftist rebels last month, the state prosecution office said.

In addition to one officer and two other soldiers, the prosecution office also ordered the arrest of one civilian, and said they would be subject to a criminal investigation. Union leaders said troops murdered the three officials in a raid near the eastern Colombian town of Saravena on Aug. 5.

The office in Colombia for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights and Amnesty International had called for an investigation into the killings.

The government of President Alvaro Uribe has stepped up the war against leftist rebels, who have been fighting for socialist revolution for 40 years in a conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives. Union officials are often targeted by far-right paramilitary outlaws, who sometimes cooperate with renegade sectors of the military.

We've given them over 3.15 billion in the last three years in Plan Colombia. Alvaro Uribe has been mocking and assailing Human Rights activists as if they were his mortal enemies. Why should we support this vile man and his gestapo thugs?

(Don't forget he has suggested total amnesty for his paramilitaries, who have entertained themselves in mass murders, and murder done the hard way (for the victems) by chain saws.)
