By Gershwin Wanneburg
VANDERBIJLPARK, South Africa (Reuters) - The United States Friday linked a South African charged under weapons of mass destruction laws with Libya's clandestine nuclear program and Pakistani scientist A.Q. Khan's nuclear black market.

Johan Andries Muller Meyer, 53, appeared in court Friday on charges of manufacturing nuclear-related material and exporting goods that could be used in developing weapons of mass destruction. Meyer was remanded in custody until Sept. 8.

Within hours the United States embassy in Pretoria issued a statement linking him to Libya's nuclear program, which the north African country disclosed in December 2003 before agreeing earlier this year to a disarmament process.

Libya began its quest for nuclear arms in 1980 and decided in 1997 to seek centrifuge equipment via the atomic black market, established in the 1980s by Abdul Qadeer Khan, the father of Pakistan's nuclear bomb.

1. THIS is a story to keep an eye on
You can bet that this guy has ties back to Halliburton and the Thatchers etc,

There is a nuclear triangle that includes South Africa and Argentina/Chile among its points - As well as the Arab states and the Middle East. Israel also used its South African ties to conduct secret nuke tests in the past.

It is a story to watch.

Uranium came from South America to South Africa which, in conjunction with Israel during the apartheid regime, did clandestine weapons tests at sea.

It is an enigma inside a riddle wrapped in a .... (whatever)

South African Charged With Trafficking

Sep 3, 5:25 PM (ET)

By TIZIANA CAULI

VANDERBIJLPARK, South Africa (AP) - The head of a South African engineering company was charged Friday with trafficking in nuclear-related materials that could be used to make weapons of mass destruction.

...

Details were sketchy. But the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria said Meyer's arrest was linked to international investigations into the network of Abdul Qadeer Khan, the disgraced founder of Pakistan's nuclear weapons program who admitted in February to passing nuclear technology to other countries.

...

A South Africa-based Israeli businessman, Asher Karni, was arrested in Denver on New Year's Day and accused of using front companies and falsified documents to buy nuclear bomb triggers in the United States for shipment to Pakistan.

Another South Africa-based suspect, identified only as Gerhard W., was arrested in Germany in August and accused of acting as a middleman in a 2001 request to provide pipes to Libya for use in a uranium enrichment facility. A company in South Africa manufactured the pipes, but they apparently were not delivered to Libya, prosecutors there said.

Seems to a SA nexus to much of the BFEE underground corruption and trafficking. Riggs bank dealing (Pinochet and EG), EG coup and Thatcher, diamonds, oil, mercs for Iraq and various coups.... Almost as bad as say Florida.
