Continental to cut more than 400 jobs (425 jobs)

Continental Airlines, in what it called the latest attempt to cut costs without seeking wage and benefit concessions from employees, has decided to cut 425 jobs.

"A majority of these reductions involve management and clerical positions," Continental said Thursday. It said some will be laid off, most of them immediately, but other positions will be trimmed by simply not filling jobs as they come open.

"These are difficult times for all of us," said CEO Gordon Bethune. "We continue to struggle to identify additional ways to lower our costs as continued losses jeopardize our survival."
