Judge blocks law curbing some violent video gamesBy DAN RICHMAN
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER
In a preliminary order, a federal judge in Seattle yesterday emphatically blocked Washington's law restricting some violent video games just weeks before it was to take effect, calling it a violation of the First Amendment.
But the state Attorney General's Office said it is determined to seek a full hearing, before the same judge, on the constitutionality of the violent-video game law, House Bill 1009.
The law had been set to go into effect July 27. After yesterday's ruling, it is dead unless it is declared constitutional.
No date has been set for the full hearing before U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik, who said yesterday that letting the law go into effect pending that hearing would cause "irreparable harm."
