Spy agencies delivered warningsAugust 24, 2004
The Government has confirmed it was warned before the invasion of Iraq that the war would spur terrorism and said it discharged its obligations to inform the public because it changed some travel advisories.
But while travellers to the Middle East may have seen the advisories,
the Prime Minister, John Howard, told millions of people in a televised address to the nation that the conflict would actually lessen the terrorist threat.
And the intelligence warnings to the Government were not exclusive to terrorist activity in the Middle East, but were assessments of the impact of the Iraq conflict on the global war on terrorism, including in Indonesia and Australia's backyard.
The
Herald revealed yesterday that
intelligence analysts repeatedly warned the Prime Minister and senior ministers both verbally and in writing that an Iraq war would inflame extremism and increase terrorist recruitment.
