(Miami-Dade Rioter) Sweeney's (R-NY) son arrested on assault charges

The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. Sweeney (R-NY) organized the famed Miami-Dade 2000 Riot. link. Now his son is arrested for participating in a gang assault that has left another youth hospitalized with severe trauma to his head and face.

Sweeney son arrested on assault charges

The son of a local Congressman is arrested on assault charges.

Police say 18-year-old John J. Sweeney was one of two teens arrested and charged with second-degree assault.
This, after a fight on Straton Lane in the Town of Stillwater Thursday night. About 15 other people were involved.
This was the second of two fights between the teens. The first took place Wednesday night on River Road in Schaghticoke.

Two young men, including the son of U.S. Rep. John Sweeney, R-Clifton Park, face felony assault charges after a group fight that landed a Stillwater resident in a Troy hospital with critical injuries.

The man sent to St. Mary's Hospital, Matthew Brady, 19, of Stillwater, suffered head and facial injuries so severe he remained in critical condition Saturday. His father, Steve Brady, said tests showed no brain damage.

"He will need surgery," Steve Brady said. He declined to comment on how the fights began. "It's still sketchy, and it's in the hands of police."

Relatives who saw Brady in the hospital said his head was so swollen they could not recognize him. Brady graduated from Stillwater High School last year. He was removed from intensive care Saturday afternoon, his father said.
