Rice counsels patience during ``ups and downs'' in Iraq
Rice counsels patience during ``ups and downs'' in Iraq

BARRY SCHWEID, AP Diplomatic Writer
Thursday, August 19, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(08-19) 12:50 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

Defending President Bush's foreign policies, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice counseled Americans to be "less critical of every twist and turn" in Iraq.

"We need to be more patient with people who are making those early steps" toward a working multiethnic democracy, Rice said Thursday as U.S. troops fought a bloody battle with insurgents in the slums of Baghdad and Iraqi forces searched for ways to subdue insurgent militias in Najaf.

Rice said it took the United States a long time to achieve democratic goals.

And so far, said Rice, an African-American, Iraq's postwar leaders have not made a compromise comparable to the one by the framers of the U.S. Constitution, who "made my ancestors three-fifths of a man."

She was referring to the provision in the Constitution that designated slaves as three-fifths of a person in calculating the population of states for elections to Congress. The slaves also were denied the vote.

3. Good point. No ups so far.
Why should we listen to her anyway? She's one of the lying liars who assured us that Iraq would be a cakewalk. We would be greeted with flowers and candy. Mission accomplished more than a year ago. Restoring democracy yadda yadda.

Now all of a sudden we're being impatient? Shut up, Condi.

8. That's what I think she's trying to "get out in front of"; i.e., prepare
American public for what she probably sees as a week of shi'ite uprisings around Iraq (and elsewhere?) after we "take out" al-Sadr. But it may well be a much longer and much harder time than a week . . . or even two, and it may not be the Shi'ites alone, since Sunnis were demonstrating against US and provisional gov. going after al-Sadr.

I think Rice's statements are indicative of the administration realizing there's big trouble "around the corner."

4. Is she suggesting that the Iraqis need to institute slavery?
I'm a little confused by this 'need to make a 3/5-person-type compromise' statement, especially coming from an apparently Black woman.

?

Did she think that was a GOOD decision? :wow:

This is as bad as when she started her 9/11 commission statement talking about the Lusitania....

9. Unbelievable. She appears to be saying that as long as Iraq
doesn't institute slavery, they're still better than.....what? Sudan? They're buddies with BushCo.

Let me follow the reasoning:

As long as Iraq doesn't institute slavery then the mission is a success, cause they didn't have slavery before we invaded, and anyway it's still better than Sudan, who are our friends anyway, so everybody stop whining.

This woman has a job as what????

You just gotta know something nasty is about to happen in Iraq. she wouldn't be saying shit like this unless she nknew something.

Methinks there's going to be some heavy casualties soon, possibly putting us over a thousand dead Americans.

Seriously, if that happens, we could be looking at 2000 total U.S. dead before the election. Nothing will incite the Muslim world more than that.

7. Why does she still have a job?
Why didn't Bush fire her incompetent ass after 9/11? Wait, I know why, it's because he's a weak minded child-man who needs his Nanny to read briefing summaries to him.

Maybe if she was fired it would mean Bush would have to admit to some responsibility or to making a mistake and we know he is incapable of doing that.

She is useless.

13. She's saying we should have more patience with the IRAQIs!!!
That incompetent bobblehead is saying we shouldn't be so hard on the poor Iraqis... it's going to take time for them to establish their democracy, bless their little hearts for trying.

But we don't blame the Iraqis for a damned thing... we blame the Bushists for causing this whole nightmare! Look at how she is trying to change the subject!

Jeebus, I hate those people so fucking much... I can't wait to see them gone!

23. We should have more patience? What about her boss?
If he had exhibited patience to let the UN inspectors do their jobs, we wouldn't have lost a 1000 American soldiers / 10,000+ American casualties / 10,000+ mainly innocent Iraqi's deaths on his watch.

Why she is still employed as an advisor after her failures to anticipate 9/11 is beyond my ken.

16. "made my ancestors three-fifths of a man."
wrong stupid; the 3/5 compromise was to count every 5 slaves as 3 people in the census (as if they were enjoying the representation in Congress in those days)

21. Right. And actually it was the Southern States who pushed for
the 3/5 compromise, to boost their number of reps in Congress.
The Northern states didn't want to count slaves at all.

22. I think she means we need more "patients".
As far as the 3/5ths argument... every time she says it is better for us to fight our enemies in Iraq rather than in the US, she is applying her own ratio to innocent Iraqi lives vs. innocent American lives.

25. Seattle area DUers might want to take note
Very sleazy Rice will be in Seattle for a public Q&A.

Dr. Condoleezza Rice, National Security Advisor, was unable to present on August 16 in Seattle due to obligations in Washington, DC. The Council is pleased to host Dr. Rice on this rescheduled date, September 7, at Meany Hall. Registrations are again available. See below for details.

Summary
Dr. Rice’s visit comes at a time of great international uncertainty and instability. The United States government continues to face difficult foreign policy choices on such issues as the war on terrorism, Iraq, the 9/11 Commission report, negotiations with North Korea, the crisis in Sudan, the nuclear arms program of Iran, instability in Haiti, anti-narcotics programs in South America, and more. Dr. Rice will give introductory remarks at the evening presentation, and then dedicate the majority of the time to answering written questions from the audience. It promises to be an engaging and fascinating dialogue with one of President Bush’s most trusted advisors. We hope you join us.

HOW MANY VOTES DOES A DEAD MAN GET, MS. RICE?

If an Iraqi child loses one leg and one arm, does he still get a whole vote? My gracious, how far we have come.

US has no choice in Pak, but to support Musharraf: Kojm
Washington, Aug 20

Despite "limited progress" towards democracy, United States has no choice but to support President Gen Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan as an alternative to him could be a radical Islamic government, deputy chief of the 9/11 panel has said.

"We want elections (in Pakistan) but we do not want President Musharraf replaced by some kind of Islamic radical government," Christopher Kojm, Deputy Executive Director of the National Commission Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, said suggesting that the outcome of polls could bring extremists to power.

Afghan president to visit Pakistan Monday :
World News > Kabul, Aug 19 :

Afghan President Hamid Karzai will take up the census of his country's refugees during talks with Pakistani authorities when he visits the neighbouring country beginning Monday, Online news agency reports.

Karzai would discuss the issue so that refugees across the border are able to cast their vote in the upcoming Afghan presidential election, Afghanistan's National Security Advisor Zalmay Rasool was quoted as saying by an Arab newspaper.

Rasool also said that soon after Karzai's visit, the census would be conducted.

Better Security 'Indispensable' for Afghan Vote - Annan
Thalif Deen

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 19 (IPS) - With battle-scarred Iraq in shambles, the United States is now trying to showcase war-ravaged Afghanistan as a potentially vibrant multi-party democracy on the road to political success, say U.N. diplomats and Afghan experts.

''(U.S. President George W) Bush desperately needs an international success story for his re-election in November,'' a South Asian diplomat told IPS.

''And despite the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, the White House is determined to ensure that the upcoming presidential elections in Kabul will take place in October as scheduled,'' he added.

But U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and several experts on Afghanistan are warning that the credibility of the upcoming elections could be in doubt unless there is a significant improvement in security for the 9.9 million Afghans who have registered to vote.
